Thankfully, a couple of guys going past saw the fire in the porch of a house, and called 111 to tell Fire and Emergency NZ about it.
By the time of the intervention by the passers-by, the occupants of the house had been alerted to the fire by the sounding of their smoke alarms, but they had no idea of where the smoke was coming from.
The fire itself was in a frying pan on a gas cooker in the porch at the rear of the house. The porch suffered minor damage, but the fire was only seconds away from breaking through the back door and into the house.
“Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fire and fire fatalities in New Zealand”
In this case, the smoke alarms would have prevented a fatality, but the unattended cooking, even though it was outside the back door, could have led to the loss of a family home and most of their possessions.
So there’s two lessons from this fire call today:
1. “Keep looking while you’re cooking!”
2. Smoke Alarms Save Lives
And if fire should happen to break out in your home…
Get out and stay out
In a fire, get everybody out and call 111.
And whatever you do, stay out.

Before you do - there's a few things you really need to know about. Take a minute and read the tips below to ensure you're asking the right questions and getting the best loan for you.
1. Shop around! Interest rates, fees and terms must be made available to you by the lender. Make sure you compare details and make an informed decision about what loan is best for you.
2. Choose a lender. Did you know that when you borrow money to buy something, you don’t have to borrow from the same person who is selling the goods?
3. Understand. Whoever is loaning you the money must ask questions to make sure you can afford the loan. They also need to help you understand the key terms of the loan.
4. Be prepared. You'll need to provide your lender with information to show that you can afford to repay the loan. This might include proof of income and expenses so make sure you have it ready.
Don't get on Auntie's bad side and do your research! You can find more information here.

While there are now over 100 DC fast chargers across NZ, having two DC charging units at one location is a first in the wider Wellington region. In fact this is a first for any location south of Waiouru!
It operates on a user-pays system and will charge a Nissan Leaf, the most popular EV currently available in NZ, to 80% within approximately 20 minutes.
So if you have an electric vehicle and it’s looking for a bit of a charge, pop in, grab a coffee and check out what’s on at the Dowse.
