Four candidates have put in nominations to replace long-standing mayor Tony Kokshoorn.
Kokshoorn has held the role since his landslide win against incumbent Kevin Brown in 2004, and has been elected unopposed four times.
Grey district councillor Tania Gibson was the first to put her hand up for the position.
She will run against long-term councillor and Runanga businessman Cliff Sandrey, West Coast Regional Council chairman Andrew Robb, and Richard Osmaston, a former Nelson candidate who campaigns against the use of money.
Buller mayor Garry Howard is also standing down. Five candidates will compete for the position: current councillor and Westport dairy farmer Jamie Cleine, former long-serving mayor Pat O'Dea, Westport photographer Charlie Bruning, rap artist Aaron Intemann, and lawyer Doug Taffs.
In Westland, incumbent mayor Bruce Smith is seeking a second term. He is going up against two sitting councillors: Gray Eatwell and deputy mayor Latham Martin. Also fighting for the mayoral spot are Ryan Kennedy from Okarito and Hokitika joiner John Mitchell.

My name is Lisa Coppins and I work as a Vet Nurse in Temuka. Lauren Prouting (vet), and I are going to Tonga in October to volunteer with SPAW (South Pacific Animal Welfare). SPAW is a registered charity that works with our island cousins to bring much needed veterinary care to areas were there are often no permanent vets. This will be my 3rd trip, and Lauren's 5th, this time round we thought we would fundraise to help cover costs of flights, and volunteer fees. Previously we have covered these costs ourselves. About 75 kilometres of coastline and riverbed was strewn with rubbish after torrential rainfall and flooding in late March exposed a disused landfill at Fox River, near Fox Glacier township.
After a two-day final push, Sunday marked the end of the volunteer effort overseen by the Department of Conservation. Along with the New Zealand Defence Force and others, volunteers collected nearly 14,000 rubbish bags worth.
