Volunteers and the Department of Conservation (DOC) are working to remove rubbish scattered across about 75 kilometres of coastline and riverbed after torrential rainfall and flooding exposed a disused landfill at Fox River in late March.
John Duder, a former environmental engineer, said he volunteered to help clean up the formerly pristine landscape because the effect on marine life would be devastating.

Regardless of our different faiths, abilities, cultures, nationalities, ages, orientations and even genders - we want to make sure that our communities are safe and welcoming for all.
There’s many ways to take part! From hosting a multicultural potluck where each attendee brings a dish from a country of their choice to coordinating a fundraiser that benefits refugees or our elderly there are thousands of ways big and small to make our households, neighbourhoods, schools and businesses even more inclusive. It could even be as simple as learning from a neighbour how to say ‘hello’ in their native language or ensuring local footpaths are accessible!
Don’t forget this month also coincides with Women’s Refugee Awareness Month and International Day of Friendship on July 30th - a United Nations day that promotes the role that friendship plays in promoting peace in many cultures.

You are welcome to come pick it up any time! I am sure you have been worried about your missing beer can. Perhaps because it 'accidentally' fell out of your car, perhaps it all of a sudden 'flew' out of your open car window, wanting to see more of the world! Of course you are aware just like every New Zealander that lost cans like yours are spoiling our Green and Clean image and are polluting our world, so of course you would like to come pick it up so you can dispose of it the right way! As for all the 'lost' Take away coffee cups, candy bar wrappers, empty water bottles and plenty of boozy cans and bottles that I regularly pick up from the Neudorf road berms......they are still waiting here to be picked up by their rightful owners! By the way......drinking alcohol while driving is frowned upon here in New Zealand. Just so you know. You are welcome.

Yet it is not part of our school curriculum.
Some experts say that has to change. It is such an existential threat that not to make it a requirement to teach children about climate change is doing them a great disservice, they say.
