The girl and a man, who is in his 80s, got into difficulty and fell in the water near the Hokitika river mouth on Thursday morning. The man was pulled from the water, but the girl has not yet been found.

Contractors have been dumping material on Hokitika Spit for the last two years as part of a project to restore the popular tourist spot and save it from being washed away by the sea.
