When will NZ go into the 4 day working week? It cannot be too far off surely.
Of course it wont be for everyone because some industries have different requirements but for the large majority it will work and you can guarantee that productivity is unlikely to suffer. In fact it could increase due to the incentive produced.

Iceland, a wealthy tier one country like NZ, has experienced a 35 hour working week for 86% of its working population over a 4 year period and the results are appreciative workers with no productivity losses and no reduction in wages/salaries.
Next on the cards for Iceland is the 4 day working week and this is due to also be experimented in several other wealthy European countries. It has been envisaged in France for some years now but the plunge is still to be taken.

The 4 day week is expected to increase daily working hours to nine hours to produce a 36 hour working week and most businesses will close either on the Monday or Friday to create an elongated weekend. But there are also several other options such as some staff on and some off scenario and mid week day off.

disappointment with the UHCC 10 year plan decision to not introduce kerbside recycling

Yes, it will bring a small increase in our rates but it will make it possible for the vast majority of residents to take action & reduce the waste stream heading to landfill. The council has chosen to do an Admiral Nelson & turn their blind eye to the problem. We need to "Think global & act local". We are the only council in the region not doing kerbside recycling. Yes, the council has voted to increase some recycling by creating a second recycling station, similar to Park St. at the southern end of the city near to Silverstream, Heretaunga & Pinehaven but this only serves the wealthy who have the time & money to be able to drive & deposit their recycling.

"When I was young I didn’t like the boatsheds. To my eye they looked derelict and unkempt – a hotchpotch of too bright clashing colours, and all of them peeling to reveal bleached wood underneath. They reminded me of my Nana’s crocheted rugs with frayed threads and darned patches. I liked things shining, new, and squared away. Anything else smacked of some sort of failure, either of duty or poverty.
Now that I’m older, and not untouched by time myself, I realise that decay is inevitable, and, more importantly, there is texture and beauty in it. The sea, like life, can be a rough place. The winds carry salt and sand, storm surges leave marks and baggage piled around the high tide mark, sometimes spilling over onto the little docks. But in this flotsam, rotting seaweed, silt, and tangled tree branches are a million little bugs, fish, and crabs – a roiling primordial soup seasoned with iodine and salt and feasted on by the birds. Nothing is lost - just transformed. Sacred kingfisher/kōtare (Todiramphus sanctus) catching the light at the Hutt Estuary boatsheds, Hikoikoi Reserve, Lower Hutt."

Despite this, the amount of waste going to landfill in NZ is high. We are the tenth worst producers of waste in the world, at an average of 3.6 kg per person, per day. Given that we produce around 300 gms of waste every two to three weeks at our house, there are obviously people producing a lot more than 3 kg.
Shortly, the Government will announce an amendment to the Act which sets targets for diversion of waste which Councils must meet. Fines will be imposed for those councils that do not meet their targets. Given the lip service that KCDC pays to waste minimisation and its preference for closing recycling centres, its highly likely that KCDC will fail to meet these targets. As well, their attitude toward paying such fines or legal fees is remarkably cavalier. They seem to see it as part of the job description. I cant say I'm comfortable with my carefully budgeted rates, that I send to KCDC every fortnight, being used to pay fines because they cannot take waste minimisation seriously. They are neither sincere or genuine in their concerns regarding management of waste, greenhouse gases and climate change.
Want to hear more? Come along to the public meeting on Sunday at 3.00 pm at the Waikanae Beach Community Hall, Rauparaha St Waikanae Beach, just down from Longbeach. We'd love to see you there.

Thank you Upper Hutt!

We have formally adopted the Long Term Plan 2021 – 2031, following a community-wide consultation during March and April. We received close to 1,000 submissions—almost three times what we had for the previous LTP.

THANK YOU for sharing your thoughts and feedback on the plans for our city for the next 10 years! It helps us in our decision making when we know that we are hearing from a larger number of our residents.

The plan that’s been adopted focuses on meeting both the current and future needs of our city, in a financially prudent way. It’s available on our website and we encourage you to read through it to see what we will be working on and where we’ll be investing.

Highlights include:
>Significant investment in our core infrastructure.
>Upgrades to H2O Xtream and the Civic Centre.
>New sustainability grant and other sustainability initiatives.
>$20 M on walking and cycling infrastructure.
>Economic development of our city and enhancing the vibrancy of our city centre

To make sure we can deliver our plan, the average rates increase over 10 years is 4.8% per annum.
