If one read the local papers recently, one could be forgiven for thinking that all was sweetness and light in Kapiti. Not so. There is a whole bunch of people pretty angry about the way in which their recycling center has been closed. Will the local papers carry the story? Hell no. Despite being sent press releases following a very successful public meeting and a big response on Neighbourly, along with many letters to Council written by individuals, not a word has been written. So much for balanced reporting. Obviously the local papers are too afraid to print anything that might criticize the Council. It just underscores what a bunch of bullies they are. Wasn't it the Fascists who shut down the press? Meanwhile, individual senior Councillors have had no problem contacting key members of the group individually and accusing them of various misdemeanors. More bullying in my opinion. It smacks of trying to pick people off.
Fortunately for us, both kcnews.co.nz and waikanaewatch.org gave us comprehensive online coverage of the meeting and resolutions passed.

We did get one veiled reference to our actions in the Mayor's column in Kapiti News this week. In it, the mayor stated we had turned the issue into a political football. Well......lemme tell ya, your worship, you were right there at the kick-off and you couldn't wait to kick the recycling center into touch. That and moving the goalposts with a series of dodgy votes made for a pretty intriguing scenario. You can’t blame us for wanting to know the real story. We don't appear to have any investigative journalism in the district. In the column, the Mayor talks about being out on Kapiti Island, releasing Kokako. Nice for the Mayor to have a break on Kapiti island away from the wee pressing problem of a $5 million shortfall in the gateway project. He is, of course, more than welcome to give that the boot.

A WINDY DAY IN PAEKAKARIKI?
MULLED WINE CONCERTS PRESENT BASSOON AND CLARINET STARS
Classical concertgoers are used to seeing the massed ranks of the orchestra. Usually, up amongst the back rows are the woodwind players - flutes, clarinets, oboes and bassoons.

But sometimes, these back-row players are let out to show off what they can do with their beautiful instruments when they are allowed to play solo.

Mulled Wine Concerts will present two rising stars of the wind instrument world in Paekakariki on Sunday 25 July.

Pianist David Barnard (Head of Accompanying at the

New Zealand School of Music) will be joined by clarinettist Ben van Leuven and bassoonist Eli Holmes for a delightful afternoon featuring some of the seldom-heard wind instrument repertoire.

Clarinet and bassoon are joined by the piano in a charming trio by

Russian composer Glinka alongside solo and duet works by Poulenc and Debussy.

Both young players are on the verge of developing international careers but have had to put their travels on hold due to the pandemic.

Van Leuven is Principal Clarinet in the Wellington Youth Orchestra and was Principal Clarinet of the 2020 NZSO National Youth Orchestra.

Holmes won the Grand Prize at the Leitzinger International Bassoon Competition and has achieved a BA degree in Philosophy and Music at Harvard University.

Both were big news at the 2020 Gisborne International Competition and both were awarded places at the 2021 Michael Hill Young Artists Programme in June this year.

They are eagerly awaiting the chance to return overseas to Norway and to the USA to pick up their career development and it is good news for Kapiti concertgoers that they will be able to play their last concert here before this happens.

Memorial Hall, Paekakariki. on Sunday 25 July 2021 at 2:30PM

Tickets: $30; $15 students.

Online sales from marygow@gmail.com 021101 9609

It had to happen at some time but just heard of burglary of a home in the Wallaceville Estate-The Reserve area of Trentham.
The area is fast approaching the half way stage of its 700 dwellings. All are equipped with burglar alarms, secure door locks and security lights and some with cameras and some with dogs.
But determined, professional burglars seem able to overcome these obstacles. On their side are high fencing, double and triple glazed windows stifling sound, the demise of Neighbourhood Watch and the general lack of neighbours communicating with each other. The latter is a major issue and a reason could be something verging on cultural typicalities.

I'm offering a block 4, 3 hour long workshops on Tuesday mornings. This is all about pattern making and arranging and is great for complete beginners to art as well as giving more experienced creatives the scope for developing some pretty sophisticated art works. It is also a very soothing and meditative art practice. I will guide you through small steps to make your 'pattern bank' and help you assemble compositions to bring them together in an art work. Looking forward to the 2020 Olympics even if a year late and live cardboard audiences with crowd sound effects coming out of sound systems.

NZ was always going to do well and perhaps now will do even better through the competition restrictions of Covid 19 having a slightly less affect on Kiwi athletes than it does on those of many other countries.

Feel most sorry for the three NZ track and field athletes who actually well and trully qualified for the Olympics but the NZ selection panel has kept them out. Mean spirited, lacking in pin pointed knowledge and not thinking ahead.

Will be glued to the tv for a couple of weeks.
