The answer is yes, it is illegal. And yet in New Zealand it's fairly common to see drivers hitting the road with their fog lights on when it's simply dark.
Those who have sat their written drivers test recently will be in the know, but be honest, did you know it was illegal?

This was brought about by particularly strong southerly winds, with relatively little rain, but followed a particularly summery April so was a bit of a shock. However, by the second week a warm front had arrived with it reaching a summery 20C, bringing some useful rain amounting to 23mm. This last week was mild, sunny and dry despite negative forecasts. Rain about now would be good, but it doesn’t seem likely, although our neighbours over the ranges will almost certainly get some.
For the month to-date the overall temperatures are running slightly above average and rainfall well below average, with sunshine about normal.
Photo: When this was taken on the evening of May 3 the southerly had eased.
