Stayed overnight before the final journey to Trentham at a cousin's home on Old Taupo Road in Rotorua. There the John Key Govt had diverted heavy traffic through OTR to avoid going through the main drag and so on soft volcanic ground, there is a shudder felt by all occupants to all the houses etc on either side of the road whenever a truck etc passes by - and there are plenty of them. But the residents get use to it as they do to the Rotorua thermal smell.
And so to come home to a 6.3 quake centered a short distance away was not as unnerving as it might have been. The Corgi didn't seem to mind either even though 30 seconds or so of quaking is a long, long time.
Maybe our steel framed home lived up to its reputation.

14th February - 10:45am Update: National State of Emergency
Minister for Emergency Management, Kieran McAnulty, has confirmed a National State of Emergency this morning due to the widespread damage across the country due to Cyclone Gabrielle.
While many regions have already declared a local state of emergency, a National State of Emergency gives the National Controller legal authority to apply resources across the country in support of a national level response.
Here's what you need to know:
- Heavy rain red warnings are in place for Northland and Hawke's Bay, with red strong wind warnings also for Northland, Coromandel and Taranaki. Check all weather warnings on the MetService website.
- States of emergency have been declared in Northland, Auckland, Tairāwhiti, Ōpōtiki, Thames-Coromandel District, Waikato District, Hauraki District, Whakatāne District, Bay of Plenty, Napier and Hastings.
- There has been a landslide in Murawai with one firefighter missing.
- Gisborne is feared cut off and the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. Residents are to take note of the Welfare Centres for Gisborne and Coromandel.
- A number of road closures are in place across the North Island. View these on the Waka Kotahi NZTA website.
- Fire and Emergency is urging people to only call 111 if life or safety is at risk after a surge in calls.
- In Auckland there are 27 shelters and civil defence centres where people can go in an emergency.

2pm Update for Hawke's Bay:
Multiple evacuations needed in Puketapu, Esk Valley, Rissington, Omahu, Waiohiki, Jervoistown and Meeanee and Waipawa.
Many remain trapped in cars and houses. Several bridges have been taken out with access between Hastings and Napier now cutoff. More than 20,000 people are without power and cellphone communication in and out of the region is patchy.
Omahu residents needing shelter can go to Hastings Sports' Centre. Taradale residents can head to St Joseph's Māori Girls' School.

Cyclone Gabrielle expected to bring significant severe weather to northern and central New Zealand from Sunday onwards
Cyclone Gabrielle is expected to move southeastwards out of the tropics and lie north of the country by Sunday. East to southeast winds will strengthen significantly over northern parts of the North Island during the weekend, and there is high confidence of severe gales for Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula from Sunday through Tuesday.
Also from Sunday through Tuesday, there is high confidence of significant heavy rainfall over Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, and Gisborne.
This high confidence extends to Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and easternmost Waikato on Monday and Tuesday, when there is also low confidence for Taranaki, Waitomo, Taumarunui, and the remainder of Waikato.
On Tuesday, southeast gales are forecast to extend to central New Zealand, and there is high confidence that they could become severe, as indicated on the chart.
Finally, heavy rain is also likely on Tuesday about central areas from Marlborough to eastern Wellington and Wairarapa, and there is moderate risk that accumulations could meet warning criteria.
Very large waves and a storm surge are expected to affect northern and eastern coastlines from Northland to Gisborne from Sunday into Monday, spreading south to Marlborough on Tuesday.

The workers at The Reserve area constructing housing on the Wallaceville Estate hear a loud, engaging and tuneful piece of bugling coming from a yard in the nearby Trentham military camp every day starting exactly at 5pm which is the time they finish work for the day.
The tune played is not The Last Post. So on most days they all turn up for work the next morning unless Covid intervenes.
