As we age, the risk of having a fall increases. Those over the age of 65 have a 1 in 3 chance of having a fall and those over 80 it’s 1 in 2.
Having a fall can be devastating and can often result in a broken bone, which is painful and can take a long time to heal stopping us from doing the things we love.
The good news is that many falls are preventable. A new movement called Live Stronger for Longer aims to help reduce the risk of having a fall so we can live an independent and active life.
Having good strength and balance is key to staying on your feet. You can find approved community strength and balance classes in your area and practical information, advice, and resources on reducing the risk of falls.
Live Stronger for Longer and join the movement today.
Proudly brought to you by ACC, HQSC, MOH and your local community health providers.

Hey neighbors we are looking for some bark or mulch that anyone may have left over or want gone??
Hi Waikato,
Do you think the 100kmh speed limit on our roads is too fast? A Landmark report is suggesting our rural roads should be reduced to 70kmh. So, is it a good idea? Reply, and let us know.

We are currently looking for Meals on Wheels volunteers to help us deliver hot healthy meals to people in the community who cannot cook or prepare their own meals. By doing so, you will be supporting amongst the most vulnerable in our community.
As a volunteer with New Zealand Red Cross you will be part of a family. We take pride in our volunteers and are involved in actively supporting and empowering our volunteers.
As a Meals on Wheels Volunteer Driver you will be directly involved in supporting vulnerable members of our community in Hamilton. Your role will be to pick up the hot meals prepared at the Waikato Hospital before dropping the meals off along a pre-determined route in a specific Hamilton suburb.
We are looking for someone with a warm smile and a friendly attitude who has a clean drivers license and access to a vehicle.
You can either volunteer regularly (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) or express interest in being a casual or back up driver (if one of our regulars cannot make it).
If you are interested, please send an email at waikato@redcross.org.nz or submit an online application through our website.
