The Entomological Society of New Zealand has identified 24 strong contenders.

Two of the nominees are being represented by our very own scientists, Dr Chrissie Painting (Tuwhaipapa - Giraffe Weevil) and PhD student, Simon Connolly (Kahuwai - Black Tunnelweb Spider). 🕷️

“Conservation tends to focus on charismatic species such as endangered birds, but invertebrates and their global decline are often overlooked,” says Chrissie.

Each year Craigs Investment Partners donates a total of $150,000 through its Christmas Giving initiative to a range of charitable groups across the country.

The investment firm places immense value on supporting the local communities it’s a part of, so community giving is very much in the fabric of their business. Founder Neil Craig was instrumental in creating the Christmas Giving programme.

“Our local Craigs branches work with the Community Foundation in their area to determine where our donations will be best put to use. Their community insight is invaluable to ensure our donations will have the biggest impact for our local charities,” says Neil.

Momentum Waikato, the region’s community foundation, enjoys this annual Christmas quest alongside its investment partners – we love honouring and connecting with hard-working frontline community groups to get useful sums into their hands with minimum fuss and effort.

This year six groups across the Waikato have received grants from Craigs Christmas Giving, a diverse range of charitable organisations that are particularly busy during the holiday season, including the Special Children's Christmas Parties pictures below.

This week's Nice Neighbours are Matt, Amelie and Jireh Rudich of Papakura. They were nominated by Yolanda Schuller.

On Yolanda's birthday, her husband had a major heart attack. They had an entire day planned, but then life threw a spanner into the works.

Yolanda asked Amelie to feed her cat, Koda, but Amelie's family went over and above. They cooked dinners two nights in a row and sent yummy treats during the tough time.

“I was really touched by their love, prayers and generosity. They are amazing. I couldn’t wish for better neighbours,” said Yolanda.

Nominate a Nice Neighbour you know, and they could be recognized on Stuff (and you both win a prize!).

ACLX is the Waikato’s leading event production equipment supplier, so unsurprisingly they have been enthusiastic supporters of the Waikato Regional Theatre since it was first proposed six years ago.

Now they have backed that up with a serious donation to the Theatre project, as part of its ‘Business Collective Support’ programme.

Managing Director Aaron Chesham, who has been designing and rigging lights for local shows and parties since the late-1990s, says there is a clear demand here for a modern performing arts venue.

“The Waikato needs and deserves a purpose-designed space for delivering complex and sophisticated entertainment events, it’s the infrastructure for the highly technical events that we haven’t been able to host in Hamilton for many years, since long before Founders was condemned,” says Aaron.

“We’re talking the flexibility that comes from having the ‘flying systems’ for scenery and staging, the wings, the acoustics, the sightlines, the accessibility, just generally the environment that a true theatre space offers that an arena doesn’t."

A traditional sail, gone since the 1800s, is back in NZ

After more than 200 years offshore, the last known traditional Māori sail has come home to Aotearoa.

And a Waikato academic was instrumental in its return.
