A pioneering meat brand which aimed to get consumers to pay for the higher cost of producing beef while protecting Lake Taupō’s water quality is shutting down.

The decision to cease trading after almost 15 years in business was described as “reluctant but necessary” by owners Sharon and Mike Barton, who said an inability to sustain the company’s original purpose in the current market environment saw them shut up shop.

Widow’s fight for change after husband’s ‘blasé’ care at Waikato Hospital

Nigel Dring had looked forward to retirement, but only got months to enjoy it.

His death in July 2023 - two days after a medical appointment - sparked an investigation at Waikato Hospital and his widow says she’s still shocked at “blasé” treatment in the days before he died.

While Nigel had told one doctor he was “really struggling to breathe”, no-one made them feel like he was in danger, Lynn Dring said.
