While in opposition, MP Phil Twyford called the annual vehicle licensing system and its 235,000 fines each year a "giant revenue gathering device".
Now the Minister of Transport, Twyford took official advice on other ways to raise the money, but doesn't plan to pursue changes at the moment.

Con # 1: A tall Indian man at the Bunnings Titirangi undercover car park is spinning a very well-practiced victim-pitch about him being a Navy cadet who needs to get to work in Devonport, and who needs petrol money to do so. The pitch is so articulate as to be utterly unbelievable. Don't fall or it.
Con # 2: A person walked into a local business in Glen Eden, claiming that he had given an expensive tie-down strap to the shop owner, and became increasingly agitated when the shop owner could not recall the receipt of the item. Thankfully the shop owner has 24/7 camera security, and when the con man was asked for a time and date of when he claimed he dropped off the tie down, the con-man beat a hasty retreat. The con here is to try and intimidate or guilt-trip the "mark" by compelling them to pay for an item that was never actually received.
I expect as Christmas approaches, we will see more of this appalling behaviour.
If anyone else has a con story to share, maybe ad it to this post, so others can be aware of them as well.

Some Papakura residents are so frustrated about their bin tags being swiped off their rubbish bins, they're coming up with some pretty creative ways to deter thieves. The pay-as-you-throw tags were introduced by Auckland Council in Papakura and west Auckland earlier this year and range from between $2.60- $5.50 a bin. To read more, click here.
Although the bin tags aren't city-wide, it got us wondering what other rubbish-bin issues were out there? Has your bin been stolen before? Do people fill your bins with their rubbish and recycling? Have you had lids or wheels broken off them? What extreme measures have you taken to make sure your rubbish gets collected? Let us know in the replies.

Many rare NZ seabirds can be seen and heard including NZ Dotterel, Variable Oystercatchers and Bar-tailed godwits. Flying mullet and stingrays are often sighted in the shallows of the Okura Estuary and Karepiro Bay, as they cruise under your kayak. Myrtle and Turtle, two resident stingrays, are regularly seen feeding off Dacre Cottage.

One of our reporters has now done a story on the matter, and found that Waitematā police (West and North Auckland) have only given out five such tickets, despite 274 being given out in South Auckland. Should police focus more on this issue out west or should we leave window washers alone?
