With warmer weather heading our way, gardening is a great way to stay fit and get regular doses of Vitamin D to help strengthen our bones.

The Home Safety checklist will give you practical tips on how to avoid falls, sprains and strains while pulling those stubborn weeds. For example, when you’re gardening avoid heavy lifting and use long-handled tools so you’re not bending over for long periods. Steady yourself when bending and standing, no pesky weed is worth falling for!

A new movement called Live Stronger for Longer is helping to reduce the risk of falls by providing practical information and free resources. We want to help you stay on your feet, and living the life you want to live.

Take the home safety checklist with your friends and family and join the movement today.

Proudly brought to you by ACC, HQ&SC, MOH and your local community health providers.

I hope this answers some of the questions I have been asked

Hi Glen,
We just wanted to let you know that our campaign has reached a milestone today with an announcement from the Minister for Disability Issues, Hon. Carmel Sepuloni, in Parliament this afternoon.

The Minister announced during question time that “Cabinet has approved a work programme to thoroughly explore how we can achieve full accessibility for disabled people and all New Zealanders”.

This is a vital step for the campaign and reflects the hard work and support of campaign advocates and supporters around the country. It couldn’t have happened without you!

In her media release, the Minister acknowledged the campaign saying “Earlier this year I was presented with a petition to put accessibility into a legislative form by the Access Alliance. Accessibility is enforced in law in some other countries, transforming the lives of disabled people and its time that we explored the feasibility of legislation in New Zealand".

Chrissie Cowan, CEO of Kāpō Māori Aotearoa and Chair of the Access Alliance has thanked the Minister saying: “On behalf of the Access Alliance, we applaud the government on this decision, and thank Minister Sepuloni for listening to New Zealanders with disabilities and taking action.

If you want to help spread the news you can share our Facebook post here.

You can read the full media release on the Beehive website here: www.beehive.govt.nz...

We will keep you posted as we advance to the next stage of the campaign to create a more inclusive and accessible Aotearoa New Zealand.

Thanks,

The Access Matters Team

Mission and Vision Statements Glen McMillan Chairman DPA Northland 6-12-2018
One of the missions of DPA Northland is to improve the lives of people with disabilities, by encouraging work effort and reward
Our vision is to be part of a world without barriers, where everyone has the opportunity to work and make choices. Disabled need employment for an improved inclusive living, this will be seen as a model promoted by DPA Northland.

We will listen and be responsive to the ever-changing needs of our communities and of people with disabilities.

To carry out our Mission and to achieve our Vision, we will:

Grow to meet the identified needs in our communities.

Maintain the highest standards.

Obtain and retain a strong base of human resources, including staff and volunteers

Increase awareness of Disabled Employment for independent living programs, work from home

Community Integration for People with Disabilities

Our key Principle lays out a vision in which people with disabilities are afforded opportunities to live in their own homes, work in regular, non-segregated employment, and make their own choices.

DPA Northland is committed to embracing these principles by adding them to our personnel policy and representing them in the community.

General Principles. Individuals with disabilities should have the opportunity to live like people without disabilities.

They should have the opportunity to be employed, have a place to call home and be engaged in the community with family and friends.

Individuals with disabilities should have control over their own day, including which job or educational or leisure activities they pursue.
Employment Individuals with disabilities should have the opportunity to be employed in non-segregated, regular workplaces. Virtually all individuals with disabilities can be employed and earn the same wages as people without disabilities.

When needed for such employment, they should have access to supported or customized employment.

Tech Jobs Individuals with disabilities should have the opportunity to be employed in home-based technical jobs such as Graphic design, IT analytics, Computer-based work, Website design, Marketing, Home based workplaces. Virtually all individuals with disabilities can be employed and earn the same wages as people without disabilities. When needed for such employment, they should have access to supported or customized employment.

Housing Virtually all individuals with disabilities can live in their own home with supports. Like people without disabilities, they should get to decide where they live, with whom they live, when and what they eat, who visits and when etc.

They should have access to "scattered site" housing, with ownership or control of a lease.

Choice Individuals with disabilities should have the opportunity to make informed choices. They must have full and accurate information about their options, including what services and financial support are available in integrated settings.

They should have the opportunity to visit integrated settings and talk to individuals with similar disabilities working and living in integrated settings. Their concerns about integrated settings should be explored and addressed.

Public Funding Funding for services should support the implementation of these principles. Currently, public funding has a bias toward institutionalization, forcing individuals to overcome myriad barriers.

Disabled persons assembly DPA

DPA Northland, what is the goal of DPA Northland. My name Glen McMillan I would like to be the chairperson of DPA Northland, there is a very good reason for this I have first-hand experience of disability my accident was a fall from a pushbike, this was before ACC. I spent four years in Hospital.

DPA Northland, what is the goal of DPA Northland. My name Glen McMillan I would like to be the chairperson of DPA Northland, there is a very good reason for this I have first-hand experience of disability my accident was a fall from a pushbike, this was before ACC. I spent four years in Hospital.

I was a pioneer in mainstreaming disabled children into schools the year 1974, the school Mt Roskill Grammar I was the first severely disabled person accepted into Mt Roskill Grammar. I was 14 disabled but gifted, I left school at 16 and started work as an industrial wireman, I went on to become a qualified appliance serviceman and progressed to a qualified TV and video serviceman, by my mid-20s I was running my own businesses in electronic service.

First came Amusement Services in the early 80s I had a round of about 2000 amusement machines such as Space invader, Defender, Buck Rodgers I contracted to the owners to keep these machines running.

Then Auckland Telephones Services, which employed 4 disabled people, Then SEO Professionals website optimisation and design, at the same time I started PlayStation Repairs New Zealand after Sony turned us down as a service agency.

With my website design and optimisation skills, I was quickly page one number one for PlayStation repairs on Google. The work arrived from all over NZ. I have featured in newspapers and magazines. I had a feature spot on TVNZ Success for Auckland Telephone services

During the time I was running these businesses I was also advocating for disability rights, something I now have 34 years’ experience in, my knowledge of the disability sector is gained from a user point of view my interest was mainly accessibility issues, I have experience in fighting and winning legal battles, both with providers and public businesses. I have done these things to improve accessibility for everybody, disabled and non-disabled. I am a strong leader.

DPA Northland needs strong leadership.

A local disabled leader states clearly nothing has changed in the last 20 years, what a statement, it shows acceptance of the status quo. I would have to ask why nothing has changed.

Glen McMillan as chairperson of DPA Northland I will work for change and not accept the status quo. My understanding of business practices, lived disability sector experience and my understanding of law make me the right choice as DPA Northland Chair Person.

I will be pushing for better signage and temporary mobility parking at events.

Free or subsidised visits for the disabled at Northland swimming pools and hydrotherapy pools

More mobility parking and better building access

Bringing to council and government attention the rapid expansion of mobility scooters and the extreme lack of planning, mobility scooter and electric wheelchair users need free charging points around Northland cities, free charging is promoted for cars, I ask that they are supplied for disabled mobility equipment users.

Disabled employment I will advocate strongly for more resources to be put into disabled employment needs.

I need all members to vote for me, a vote for me is a vote for strong leadership that will bring real change for the disabled right down to street level

Can I ask why in 2018 mobility taxis services are still unable to transport mobility scooters
I am acting chairman of DPA Northland, I have raised the issue with WDC and intend to pursue this large gap in the market, companies like total mobility are not to blame. Government and council planners are, WDC had agreed to listen which is a good start, mobility scooter use is increasing they already outnumber wheelchairs, I believe that within 5 years there will be four mobility scooters for every wheelchair, that is potentially 80% of the market you could be missing out on, in most cases the mobility scooter rider would be able to go into the passenger seat so only the scooter would be required to fit in the transport provided. As a business, I think you should think hard about the points I have brought to your attention.

At this time December 2018 in Whangarei to my knowledge, there is no available transport options for mobility scooter users, providers tell me it is in the too hard basket. Consider this If I wanted to get a mobility scooter serviced or indeed buy one, the people that sell and service these have no problems at all transporting them, so it can be done
