For years The Traditional Thai Restaurant in Main Street Upper Hutt was rated as one of the best of its kind anywhere, and of super value.

But post-Covid, this restaurant has lost its mojo and is just a shell of the reputation it had quickly and carefully built up.

Staffing shortages - deliberate or not - and the advent and the virtual taking-over of its takeaway arm have bitten into the establishment to the point that it will soon self-discover an undercurrent of customer resistance.

Waiting times for meals for sit-in customers who have ordered can be well over an hour, orders made by telephone can be lost in space, the meal preps are not as good as they once were and quality has taken a backward step. Efficiency has gone out the door and the meals have been down-sized.

One can only hope for an eventual revival for a return to its former glory. The competition is huge even in Upper Hutt.

Some Cafes in Upper Hutt can do better with not much effort. However they may also be experiencing the effects of a downturn in patronage or spending at such places as cafes, bars and restaurants which is likely to continue for most of 2024.

Of four recent cafes in Upper Hutt to open their doors, three have ongoing issues at this stage.

One has been operating for 6-7 weeks and despite the mostly good weather has yet to introduce outside tables and chairs to its patio which has a garden outlook. If it's not getting sufficient customers, maybe part of the answer is pretty clear to see why not.

Have visited another twice within the time frame published and on one occasion told that the cafe had closed early through lack of customers and the second time that the coffee equipment had been turned off through lack of customers.

Went to another cafe for a first visit and the coffee was luke warm.

More promising at a fourth, who told me they were going to extend their opening hours.

Smoke was also reported in the Hutt Valley and the Wellington coastal suburb of Miramar.

What you need to know:
- Fenz was alerted to the blaze at 11.04pm on Thursday, and the first crews arrived by about 11.10pm.
- About 7.15am Friday, Fire and Emergency NZ said eight crews were still working to bring the vegetation fire under control. Helicopters with monsoon buckets would also be working on Friday morning.
- The fire was burning over about 10ha in Whitireia Park, and people were asked to stay away from the area. No homes were at risk, Fenz said.
- Residents in Wellington’s northern suburbs woke to the sight of a red glow in the sky and the smell of smoke in the air.
- Commuters travelling into Wellington city from the north were also driving through heavy smoke over the motorway in the central Porirua area.
- Fenz said smoke was affecting a large part of Porirua, and the National Public Health Service had advised that people in an area where there was smoke should go inside, close the windows and doors and turn off air conditioning units. Anyone who had been exposed to the smoke and was feeling unwell should contact Healthline (0800 611 116) or ring their doctor for advice.

Beware of inhaling smoke:
People should avoid exposure to smoke if possible.
Smoke may irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and airways. Symptoms could include watery or sore eyes, dry or sore throat, sore nose, cough, tightness of the chest or difficulty breathing. In healthy people, most symptoms disappeared soon after exposure to smoke ended and did not cause long-term health problems. Smokers, the elderly, children, and those with heart disease, asthma or other lung disease were at the greatest risk of harm from smoke inhalation.

From 12:01am, Wednesday 17th January, Wellington, Porirua, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt will move to level 2 water restrictions. All unattended watering systems will be banned, this includes household sprinklers and irrigation systems.

You will be able to water your garden by hand anytime, on any day, so long as you don’t leave your garden hose or watering device unattended.

This helps to limit water waste and helps reduce the risk of tighter water restrictions and further shortages.

Rain is forecast, but the amount expected is not enough to help the situation.
