The North Canterbury resident was baffled to receive a note in his mailbox berating him for the state of his long grass.

He found the handwritten missive on Tuesday and posted it to Facebook, saying he was now tempted to leave the grass to grow just to make a point. Read more here.

Trail of brightly-coloured giant penguins goes on display in Christchurch

Fifty giant penguin sculptures have been installed throughout Christchurch and in the surrounding towns of Akaroa, Rolleston, Lincoln and Kaiapoi..

Each giant penguin sculpture has been decorated by commissioned artists, while 65 smaller penguins have been decorated by schoolchildren.

Each giant penguin sculpture has been decorated by commissioned artists, while 65 smaller penguins have been decorated by schoolchildren.

Visitors are encouraged to visit all the sculptures on the trail, upload photos of each, and vote for their favourite. This can all be done via the phone app Pop Up Penguins 2020. It contains information about each penguin, its artist and a map of where they can all be found. Read more here.

Evacuation zones in North Canterbury will be reviewed after modelling showed coastal towns Kaiapoi and Pegasus could flood in a tsunami.

Environment Canterbury commissioned GNS Science to model the impacts of various tsunami scenarios for North Pegasus Bay, after work completed for Christchurch last year resulted in larger evacuation zones for the city.

The report shows that the largest tsunami threats could affect areas of the district outside current evacuation zones, including parts of the Kaiapoi and Pegasus townships. Read the full story here.
