But leaving your home open may increase the risk of break-ins and create an easy way for intruders to gain entry into your home.

Exceed is here to help you with 10 top tips to improve your home security:

1 - Use key-operated locks on doors and windows โ€“ and donโ€™t hide spare keys under doormats or in obvious places for burglars to find them easily

2 - Install security screens on all doors to keep your family safe

3 - Install window security stays to increase security, natural safe ventilation and prevent children falling from high windows

4 - Install hinge bolts to stop doors from being lifted out of their frames

5 - Upgrade beads and rubbers to hold any glass in place

6 - Install digital deadlocks so you no longer need to remember your keys when you leave your home and grant short term access to friends or Airbnb guests

7 - If you have an alarm system, make sure it is working properly

8 - Keep plants trimmed around doors and windows and install sensor lights or CCTV cameras

9 - Donโ€™t leave valuable items like keys out in easy view for opportunistic thieves

10 - If youโ€™re going away on holidays, make your home look occupied โ€“ leave the TV or radio playing, set lights to come on with a timer and ask a neighbour to collect your mail and take care of bins

Being aware of potential security risks and taking action early is the best way to keep your home and loved ones safe.

North Canterburyโ€™s largest town has been without a publicly-accessible police station for more than two months after safety concerns closed two front counters.

In September 2019, the Rangiora station closed suddenly for โ€œurgent seismic remedial workโ€ after concerns were raised about the building during refurbishment work.

The work was only expected to take about one week, but the timeframe was pushed out to six to eight weeks. The closest station is now 12km away.

Do you think 12km is close enough for a local police station?

This Fraud Awareness Week we are encouraging Kiwis to take a moment to stop and think โ€˜is this for real?โ€™ when contacted unexpectedly and asked for personal info.

New Zealand Police's Financial Intelligence Unit estimates New Zealanders lose $20-30 million annually to scams.

HOW TO AVOID A SCAM:

+ A genuine bank or organisation will never contact you to ask for your PIN, password or to move money to another account.

+ Never click on a link in an unexpected email or text โ€“ you could be giving access to your personal and financial details.

+ Always question uninvited approaches in case it is a scam. Instead, contact the company directly using a known email or phone number.

+ Donโ€™t assume an email or phone call is authentic โ€“ just because someone knows your basic details (name and address, or motherโ€™s maiden name) it doesnโ€™t mean they are genuine.

+ Donโ€™t be rushed into making a decision or financial transaction on the spot โ€“ a genuine bank or trusted organisation would never do this.

+ Listen to your instincts โ€“ if something feels wrong then it generally is.

If you believe you are the victim of a scam you can contact Police and report the matter via 105.
