Nothing toxic or requiring special handling, just timber offcuts, a couple of cartons of workroom rubbish, a couple of broken plastic chairs, a few bits of an old concrete path and so on.
I was charged $87.50 for the load!
This is just outrageous, our council should be encouraging people to dump responsibly not gouging us at the gate.
KCDC have completely abdicated their responsibility by contracting out rubbish collection and management to expensive and grossly inefficient contractors. We have 3 different trucks collecting rubbish in our street, one following the other. How can that be efficient?
KCDC couldn't organise a booze up in a brewery, bloody hopeless, and we pay them for their incompetence.

… View moreOur recently-joined member, Dallas New, is a Canadian veterinary epidemiologist and last evening she enthralled us with her study of anthrax among bison.
Firstly, she told us something of the history of epidemiology, which began when Dr John Snow found the cause of a cholera outbreak in London.
Then she explained how bison had recovered from near-extinction in North America, and why anthrax is threatening them. All mammals are vulnerable to anthrax, but cattle and bison are particularly intolerant to it.
Anthrax spores move around, but lodge and persist in the soil. For this reason, dead bison have to be cremated rather carefully so as not to release more spores into the ground. This is quite a challenge as bison are huge and fuel has to be brought to the site by helicopter.
Dallas collected data in the Northwest Territories to find out why outbreaks of anthrax poisoning occur in bison populations.
There were three hypothetical causes: spores could be incubating, especially in hot weather and then bursting out; anthrax could be concentrating in bison ‘wallows’; or bison may always carry anthrax but sometimes have low resistance to it.
Many research projects have inconclusive results and this was one of them. It seems likely that outbreaks occur because of all three factors.
Anyway, Dallas clearly enjoyed her spell in the Canadian wilderness and earned a Master’s degree.

Over the last two years owner Alla Baider has spent $25,000 trying to keep her beloved pet mobile.
Dolly has an empathy with people, that really shone through the Covid lockdown, she said.

The duo was formally formed in 2011 and Beth says "It has been pure joy from Day One! The art of piano duet playing is akin to two soulmates knowing what the other is thinking as the music unfolds. Our 4 hands (and 1 foot pedal) blend to act as one, creating a synergy that brings the music alive. This form of chamber music has always fascinated us and we simply love performing together".
Many of the major composers have taken up the challenge of writing for this format. Nicole and Beth describe the concert as being titled ‘Fantasia’. "We will take our audience through a fantasy musical landscape that begins with the tranquility of Bach and Mozart, leading up to the monumental work of the Schubert Fantasy and the magnificent sound world of Rachmaninov, then peaks with the wildly imaginative and finger twisting ‘Blue Danube Fantasy’ by Strauss/Anderson."
Forget a gentle cruise down the Danube, or twirling to the tune of a gentle waltz in some crystal illuminated ballroom. This is musical theatre, the piano gets a full work-out and the performers are jumping around showing just how good four-handed music can be.

Have you had water supply cut off as a result of burst water mains? What other water problems are prevalent in your community?
Wellington residents are filing more than 50 complaints a day regarding the capital's ageing water infrastructure.
One leak near the Prime Minister's official residence in Tinakori Road has not been fixed since being first reported in September 2020.
Wellington Water spokesman Alex van Paassen says that some longer running leaks may not be showing up in data searches.
"Sometimes they get fixed but other nearby leaks are still going; sometimes the fix doesn't work, or a new leak pops up at the same place; sometimes they're private – private leaks can get into the neighbours at war territory," he said.
Van Paasen said that there were several reasons for the delayed fixes including Wellington Water's aging workforce, lack of skilled workers and an increase in work volume.
A presentation was delivered to Wellington City councillors in late-2020 showed that almost half of the cities pipes needed replacing, with $578 million needed to clear a variety of other accumulated issues.

Here's what my foster mum has to say about me:
Charlotte is a sweet wee girl, gentle and friendly with kittenish spirit coming through from time to time. She was initially nervous in her new environment, but patience and gentle encouragement has seen her become playful and sociable.
She likes being patted but isn't too fussed on being picked up and held (although this is improving) and isn't a lap cat at the moment. She spends some of her time in other rooms around the house but mostly likes company and comes when called.
She is an early riser and when she wants something can be quite vocal. She loves playing with small toys and moving things and gets quite absorbed watching action programmes on tv. A warning though, she loves electrical cables. She is a well adapted and house trained cat, and surprisingly, given her underlying nervousness, isn't scared of the vacuum cleaner, however I don't think she will like a rowdy household."

This year’s theme for the Rotuman Language Week is Tutur häk ne måür lelei – which refers to the four pillars of life and wellbeing (spiritual, physical, psychological, and social) and it acknowledges and celebrates the strength and resilience of our Pacific communities during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is the first of the nine Pacific Language Week celebrations for 2021 and as always, it started with a formal flag raising in Porirua, which members of the Rotuman community, the Mayor and elected members attended.
