Professor Richard Stubbs spoke about a business known as
P3 Research which has the goal of contributing to the
improvement of health outcomes for their participants and
future generations by providing independent and accurate
clinical research with integrity and professionalism.
This statement of the organisation’s mission and goal hides a fascinating story of how Richard left a career
as a surgeon to establish a business undertaking clinical trials in New Zealand. The key message was how
much effort goes into the integrity of the trial outcomes but above all else how important the safety of the
participants is.
Trials for new pharmaceuticals are a critical step in the very expensive process of achieving acceptance for
these products which may change peoples lives for the better.
Participation is a way of helping long-term the long term while perhaps helping yourself along the way.

The presentation went way past time and at the end the questions continued to flow reflecting the interest in
the presentation of which I have captured but a modest part.

Sir Ron Young was appointed chairperson of the New Zealand Parole Board in August 2018. He has spent more than 27 years in the judiciary, 14 of those as a High Court Judge until he stepped down in 2015. He was Chief District Court Judge from 1993 until 2001, responsible for overseeing 112 judges from the criminal, civil, family and youth court jurisdictions nationwide and previously a member of the Chief Justice’s panel reviewing media televising, photographing and use of sound recording in court. Besides his role as Chairperson of the Parole Board, Sir Ron currently presides on the Courts of Appeal in Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Pitcairn Islands.
In his talk Sir Ron will talk about the current statistics in crime and who are and for what are offenders punished for in New Zealand. Finally, he will discuss how parole works and why we should be bothered trying to rehabilitate offenders.
The evening starts at 6pm on Tuesday 28th
November, at the Mana Cruising Club.

The Paul Harris Fellows was established in his honour in 1957 to express appreciation for the contribution to the humanitarian and educational programmes of The Rotary Foundation.
Rotarians designate a Paul Harris Fellow to recognise a person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives and mission of The Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace. Thus, this is a recognition made on behalf of all members of the Club and is not lightly made.
Bruce Couch joined Rotary in June 1988, having been a member of Tawa Rotary and
President. He was President of Plimmerton in 2008-2009 and recipient of the President’s
award 2016. In November 2009 he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow. Bruce has been Treasurer for a very long time and always participates in the various Club projects with enthusiasm and vigour. President Denise recognised Bruce’s ongoing service to RCoP and said as President” I have found you approachable, your can-do attitude invaluable and your advice is always strongly appreciated. Equally your ability to provide a solution to every problem that might arise is priceless.”
