Rowing is one of Judy’s passions, and she’s had great success with it, competing up and down the country since picking up the sport in her 50s. A highlight in her rowing career was in 2017 when Judy, along with her rowing partner Alison, competed in The World Masters Games, winning a silver medal in the 1000m Women’s Pairs.
She currently holds the title of top women's single sculler in the 70-75 year age group in New Zealand and is second in the North Island for the 65-75 year age group.
Adventure is in Judy’s DNA. She’s always up for hitting the open road and exploring the fantastic wilderness that Aotearoa has to offer. When she’s not rowing, Judy loves to hike. And she’s no stranger to several hard South Island trails.
Having a lifestyle this active and busy means that Judy doesn’t want to be worrying about her home while she is away. She chose Ryman’s Murray Halberg Village because it suits all her needs, right down to the location near the water as well as all the safety and security benefits.
“It’s a lock up and leave it situation,” she says.

I really must put some of the statements. For instance the claim that there has been 27 deaths there. This is simply not true. Perhaps they were referring to the deaths in the coal mines all around that area, but I have lived in Hikurangi since 1974 and to my knowledge there has only been two deaths in that period. I am disgusted with the WDC sign that is erected at the 'jumping rock' forbidding diving or jumping off said rocks. I know the Coroner wanted the barrier erected and the signage but I feel the Council has gone too far. By all means have signage there warning of the possibility of slipping on the rocks when wet, but the banning of diving/jumping is quite simply ridiculous! No wonder parents wrap their children in 'cotton wool' with this sort of over-reaction to a tragedy. I feel strongly that the Council needs to change their sign immediately and in future consult with the community before taking such draconian steps.

She never asks, "do you mind if I smoke in your presence?" She goes away and smokes where it cannot hurt anyone else. This is often very inconvenient. What's worse her health is shot. But unfortunately she is addicted and stopping has, so far, proved impossible. She has said that she wishes cigarettes had not been available 40 years ago.
We had an opportunity to save future generations. There was no question of banning smokers. Instead the idea was to stop people becoming smokers. Of course the tobacco lobby screamed and applied pressure. But we had a strong government who said, "No! Our people's health comes first." Unfortunately the current government caved in.
All sorts of stupid arguments were raised. One of the best looked at 20 years time. Imagine two forty year olds. The older can go into a shop and buy cigarettes. The younger is banned. But look at it more closely. The elder is spending $500 a week, coughing his guts out while trying vapes and patches. Meanwhile the younger, who is not addicted, has a larger disposable income and better health.
Perhaps I'm being unfair on the government. Perhaps they didn't just cravenly cave in. Several had worked for the tobacco companies in the past. Whilst they aren't being paid now (that would be an illegal conflict of interest) what happens when they retire? In the UK there was the 'revolving door syndrome'. Government ministers would hand out favours and then when they left office, suddenly they became non-executive directors.

There is even a sub-group who meet on a Saturday who call themselves the Knackered Knitters where the ante is upped, the music is broken out and the natter can get naughty!
“Yesterday we were dancing queens,” says Sue, who moved into the village 18 months ago.
“Sylvia knitted right through it,” she laughs.
“My feet were dancing!” adds Sylvia.
