On behalf of Te Kowhai locals, I recently approached the Road Safety Team at the Council to apply for the stretch of road at the new sand quarry be temporarily changed from a 100km zone to an 80km zone.

Following my meeting with the Road Safety Manager, Nathan Hancock, the request was turned down. The reasons being that the sand quarry does not fit the criteria for a temporary speed limit restriction.

I've attached the guidance paper on temporary speed limits for information, in case anyone is interested in reading it.

It's important to remember that the sand quarry is subject to an Environment Cour Resource Consent. Within that consent are conditions related to traffic which include a daily maximum number of vehicles that are permitted to enter/exit the site. The consent also requests signage and communication from the owners to cartage companies, asking their vehicles to circumnavigate the school if possible.

The Waikato District Ccountil Monitoring Team are overseeing the operation to ensure that all Resource Consent conditions are adhered to.

So, in a nutshell, the speed limit at the quarry site of Ngaruawahia Road will remain as it is at 100km/hr.

Mini was a DC girl almost 4 years ago, she had been purchased with a stolen cheque, driven half way across the country with another dog in a stolen car, then ended up in the pound at only 4-5 weeks old. We couldn't leave her there the day we seen her so home she came.

She has been living in an awesome family home, been to puppy school, and due to a change in circumstances she now needs to be rehomed.

Mini can be wary of strange men but warms up to them very quickly. Medium build, approx 21 kgs. She enjoys a good walk, is playful and loves company. She would suit a home with an experienced older or retired couple wanting a dog to take out and about. She's a very sweet natured dog and submissive with people. She is low-medium energy level. Vaccines are up to date. An adoption fee of $180 is asked to help cover costs while in our care.

The kowhai competition is held annually and has been running for many years now. It’s organised by the local Community Group and is intended to draw people’s attention to the tree from which our village gets its name.

The community group selected the finalists for each of the four categories and winners were voted for by the public over one week in early November.

A prize of $50 is awarded for the winner of each category. But obviously it’s not about the money it’s about being world famous in Te Kowhai and being able to boast having the BEST photograph for the year.

The winners are:
1. Age 12 and under: TJ Ellis
2. Age 13 to 17 years: Sheree Williamson
3. Age 18 years and above: Steven Hood
4. People’s Choice: TJ Ellis

Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to those who entered. A record number of entries this year and some excellent submissions which we hope to be able to show off in the newsletter over the coming months.

We're all busy - so how can we get our kids out of the car on the school run?

With it has come worsened air pollution, greater congestion, and increased danger as more kids are involved in road accidents. Worse, it has undermined our community cohesion: Schools can and should be the hearts of our communities
.

We're backing schools to set up walking buses and other solutions, with parents and volunteers helping local kids get to class safely.
We wrote to the nation's mayors pleading with them to lower speed limits outside schools, and many have come back to us with expressions of support. We talked to well-known New Zealanders with school-aged kids, and they united behind the campaign.

You can get involved too. We know people are busy, so the Sunday Star-Times and Neighbourly are encouraging families to choose one day a week when they and their kids walk, scoot, cycle - even ride a horse if that's what works for you!

I've chosen Mondays as the days I'll cycle to school with my 6-year-old son. And Neighbourly has set up a special pledge page, where you can choose a day when you will try to Foot It with your kids, talk with others doing the same - and go into the draw to win one of 50 Micro scooters. www.neighbourly.co.nz...

Hey neighbors!
7 months living in Glen Massey and we think it's time to get some natural lawn movers on our property.
We'd like to put it out there to see if anyone firstly has any sheep or goats they'd like to get rid of - we'll happily come take them off your hands. Alternatively we'd like to purchase some.

We're looking for either two sheep/lambs, or two goats/kids.

We're not sure if it's best to start out with babies or get more grown ones - any advice would be great. They're mainly for the top back hill area on our 1300 sq.m property.

We're double checking to make sure the perimeter is. Ice and secure too.

We also have a chicken coup that needs some chickens, but first things first.

Regards,
Ryan and Kathy
