In New Zealand we have a highly contagious disease known as Rabbit Calicivirus Disease (RCD), also known as Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (HVD). This is invariably lethal in all rabbits.
It is easily spread and infected rabbits can spread it through faeces, urine, saliva, nasal discharge and blood. The main vector for transmission of the disease are flies.
Most rabbits die very quickly within a few days and often without showing any obvious clinical signs before they die.
There are 3 strains of the virus in New Zealand and we have available a vaccine that will offer good immunity against 2 of the strains, sadly no vaccine is 100% effective.
Vaccination can be started at 10-12wks of age with just 1 vaccine required yearly. If starting vaccines before 10-12wks of age, then they will need a booster every 3wks until they reach 12wks of age.

A fire that engulfed a house in Pokeno was found to have been caused by grass clippings catching alight on a lawnmower that was still hot from use.
Fire crews responded to the house fire on January 31, with four crews at the scene and another three dispatched.
Area Commander Geoff Purcell said that the occupants of the house were lucky to get out quickly. "This fire shows that fire can get very real, fast...It can take just three minutes for a fire to become deadly."
Share your thoughts below and please type NFP if you don't want your comments featured in your local community paper.

These hens are 12 to 18 months old and have been caged for the entirety of their lives up until coming to us so please be aware that they will have feathers missing and it will take some time for them to reach their peak condition.
All hens are given rehabilitation time to ensure they are getting the best possible care as they transition from cage to free-range life.
Before leaving with you they will know how to walk, eat and drink, and where to go to sleep like normal hens! (Although please note battery hens rarely ever learn to roost - so a suitable house must be provided with nesting boxes on the floor, or very low perches for them to access).
Each hen is de-wormed and de-mited before rehoming along with nail and beak trims if necessary.
(De-worming and de-miting product also available through us - message to enquire).
These hens will also need a high quality high protein feed - in turn you will be rewarded with beautiful healthy hens and an abundance of eggs for years to come!
(We also have feed available! 25kg for $30!)
Please do not hesitate to ask any questions.
Price: $20
