The whitebait season may be closed earlier to help declining numbers, with reports of a very patchy season in the south so far.

The season starts on August 15 and runs until November 30, although it is slightly different for the West Coast and the Chatham Islands, but whitebaiters either say they are having a booming season or a poor one.

National Whitebait Working Group member Jan Riddell, of Winton, says her group is meeting regularly to give Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage recommendations about improving whitebait management.

West Coast rugby team fined $4000 for fielding ineligible player in Heartland Championship

The union's Heartland Championship team fielded an ineligible player across the first four rounds of this year's competition.

The player was listed as a local, but did not meet the criteria to be classed as one.

What's the highest price per litre of fuel you've paid for recently? Petrol prices are skyrocketing around the country, with some Kiwi motorists shelling out more than $3 a litre for fuel!

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern claims that New Zealanders are being "fleeced" at the pump, but petrol companies are pushing back on those claims.

The Government plans to rush through changes to an act, which will allow a watchdog to investigate the margins on fuel. Click here to read more about how your rising fuel taxes will be spent.
