Dunedin "scarfies" are being offered an incentive to change their hour of free power, after some flats experienced blackouts due to high usage last winter.

Heaters, dryers, dishwashers and showers are in are hot demand between 9pm-10pm in the heart of Dunedin's student quarter – which presents a unique challenge for power company Electric Kiwi.

The company's popular Hour of Power deal, where consumers choose a free 60 minutes of off-peak power (9pm-7am and 9am-5pm), is popular for those students living in the notoriously cold Dundas St flats.

Recent phone calls have originated from Australia (0061) and the United Kingdom (0044).

Dunedin Senior Sergeant Graeme Evans says the Police’s message on scams is simple – do not engage with anyone on the phone and hang up immediately if you think you are being scammed.

Anyone who believes they are a victim of a scam should immediately report it to their bank, and then to their local Police.

Uni students have taken over this historic Dunedin building, but back in the day it was a place they would have avoided like the plague. With good reason.

This is the former Pelichet Bay Infectious Disease Hospital, once hidden from view behind large trees.

It's a huge building, currently in four flats, with a total of 14 bedrooms. And it looks much like any scarfie house, with its old couches on the veranda and drum kits in the bedroom. But this house has an Historic Place Category 1 listing, because it's pretty special.
