One of the men believed to be behind a daring daytime heist has been arrested by police.
Two men, who were captured on CCTV, made-off with an $11,000 necklace from Pascoes The Jewellers in Dunedin’s Golden Centre Mall on Monday, February 12.
A month later, police confirmed they have arrested a 30-year-old man in Mosgiel over the theft.
That wasn’t the only charge he faces, Sergeant Matthew Lee said.
The man tried to flee from police, but not before assaulting an officer.
He now faces charges of aggravated assault, resisting police and escaping custody, and was expected to appear in the Dunedin District Court this week.
Police also executed a search warrant to look for the stolen item.
As part of the theft, the two men entered the store and spoke to staff, negotiating a possible price for the gold necklace, described as a 9ct, 55cm heavy oval curb chain.
One of the men had previously been in the store asking questions about the same necklace since last year.

A Dunedin supermarket that has been plagued with rats is set to close for 48 hours.
Staff and the union of Countdown Dunedin South store were told on Friday afternoon.
Woolworths New Zealand, which operates the store, confirmed the recent capture of four more rodents has forced the store to close.
Woolworths New Zealand director of stores Jason Stockill said: "Our local community will be aware that we’ve been working to address a rodent issue at Countdown Dunedin South for the last couple of months."
Food safety was the company’s “absolute priority”, with the supermarket giant working closely with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), and pest control contractor Rentokil.
“We believed we had addressed the issue, as there had been no evidence of rodent activity since January 28.
Unfortunately we have caught four rodents over the last few days so it is clear we have more work to do.”
NZ Food Safety and Rentokil confirmed the rodents were not nesting in the store, but appeared to be coming in from outside.
The Dunedin City Council was also involved in surveying neighbouring areas, in what the supermarket chain called “a coordinated response”.
“Having a safe and hygienic store is incredibly important to us and we would like to apologise to our customers for any distress and inconvenience this update causes,” Stockill said.
“We will reopen when we are confident these additional measures have been implemented. We anticipate this will be on Monday morning.”

An argument over a chip-loving seagull ended with a knife being pulled and police called to the scene.
The incident unfolded in the car park of a Green Island supermarket on Saturday, about 7.35pm, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said.
The callout was prompted after occupants of a vehicle, who were eating chips in their parked vehicle, managed to entice a seagull inside.
The occupants were told to “cut it out” by another motorist, who was not amused by their antics.
That led to the group getting out of the vehicle, and challenging the motorist, including pulling a knife on them.
Police located the vehicle and invoked a search without warrant and recovered the knife.
Police were now awaiting CCTV of the incident to determine what transpired.
The person who presented the knife was a 15-year-old boy, Bond said.
The seagull was not injured in the incident.
“I assume it managed to get away with some chips.”

Construction on some sections of George St – the city’s premier shopping street – is going 24/7 before work pauses for the annual Dunedin Santa Parade, this Sunday.
Normally, construction on the $51 million CBD project, which includes a $23m three waters’ upgrade, had been restricted to weekdays, but that changed over the weekend as contractors race to finish before the parade.
The Dunedin Santa Parade, now in its 25th year, is Otago's largest free public event. The annual parade route runs along George St, starting from the intersection with Regent Rd, and travels through the Octagon before finishing in Moray Place.

Police have identified a person of interest after a Dunedin high school received an emailed threat, leading to an almost two-hour long lockdown.
Armed police were called to Bayfield High School on Tuesday, about 8.45, with the school remaining under lockdown until 10.30am.
The school, in an email to parents and caregivers, said ‘’we received an anonymous threat’’, and were liaising with police over the source of the email.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond confirmed police were speaking to a person of interest, a youth, over the matter.
The investigation was ongoing, but police were not seeking anyone else over the matter.
The incident affected an exam due to start that morning.
