To help, New Zealand Red Cross provided $6.9 million to 179 Canterbury schools, designed to improve the well-being of children by funding a range of school programmes, events and initiatives.

Find out the difference this funding made to both the schools and students in the sixth of our 10 Good Stories videos. Plastic bags going - dog poo, maybe not?

Christchurch has one of the highest populations of dog owners in NZ. And many use those dreaded plastic bags to pick up what the dog has left behind. Some have already tried the expensive compostable alternatives - and found that most fail, somewhat catastrophically! So my question is: Have those mayors who are voting out plastic bags (via a levy or such) actually thought this through? Are they planning to provide e.g. plastic-less, special dogpoo bins - necessarily separate from rubbish bins - where the pickup is no longer enclosed in a bag, and so can be disposed of by the council in an environmentally friendly way? Perhaps picked up by owners using (provided) scoopers? We need to think this through: When the bags go, what exactly are you taking with you when you walk the dog?

If you or you know of anyone looking for a loving, affectionate, gentle natured cat, please message me. Evie was rescued from the SPCA after the 2010 earthquakes and I don't really want to take her back there. I would love for her to have a home that can give her the love and attention she deserves ... also knowing that she's actually going to be well looked after, not mistreated or abandoned. Evie is about 8 years old, fixed, micro-chipped and recently vaccinated. Again, if you know of anyone who could take her on, please let me know. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 😢

Flood water is receding slightly and rain is expected to reduce significantly overnight. However, there is still significant flooding in the Heathcote river area and the flood waters are expected to rise again at the next high tide at 3.42am tomorrow.

With this in mind, and for safety reasons now that it is dark, we recommend that people who have not yet evacuated remain in their homes, and those that have evacuated do not try to return overnight.
