Avonside resident and Greening the Red Zone founder Ashley Campbell was horrified when she saw what was once a thick patch of ribbonwood seedlings become a bare patch of dead shrivelled up stalks after being sprayed by contractors.
But Land Information NZ, which manages the land, says vegetation across the red zone has been independently assessed and plants of significant ecological value already identified and retained.

The specially designed habitat will hopefully encourage more lizards to settle along the lower Heathcote River in Woolston.

The 50kmh speed limit on Port Hills Rd, from Garlands Rd to the Tunnel Rd intersection, was legally changed to 60kmh by the NZ Transport Agency in March 2011, but the signs were never changed so police have been ticketing people based on a 50kmh limit.
