Hi Neighbours,

Can you taste a difference between budget and premium milk? There are few things that divide the public as much as the budget versus branded milk debate.

In Stuff's new 'Milking It' investigation, we look at the difference between branded milks, the current milk prices in New Zealand, as well as the comeback of glass milk bottles.

So, what are your thoughts on our country's milk? Take part in our poll, and feel free to share your thoughts in the replies!

A big thank you to the weather gods. It has been estimated that we may have had between 500 to 800 visitors to the market. Stall holders have told me that they were pleased with the sales that they had made. In asking visitors what they thought of the market the replies were all positive. However there were some suggestions that we need to have some more food stalls including fresh produce. There was also suggestions about a coffee vendor, well there are places very close by for coffee etc, the closest being FOOLS OF DESIRE who are great supporters of the market, as a result we will not be having a coffee vendor at the market. We have survey forms handed back from the stall holders with a very positive response. During the next market we will have survey forms for visitors to fill in. We now have full resource consent form council for the next 2 years. This comes with a few rules that we must abide by. We also have a list of fixed dates for the market for the next 12 months. We appreciate any good positive comments / suggestions. We want the market to be a happy friendly place for all stall holders as well as visitors. Re music at the market. We must keep the noise levels down. We would welcome baskers to be part of the market, BUT, no portable sound system. We do not have a power source and we will not allow any portable generators, this being one of the conditions to comply with the resource consent. It was pleasing to note that those who had dogs at the market were all on leads, THANK YOU.
The next market day will be on the 16th September.

When do you need to change your vehicles serpentine belt?

Years ago, auto mechanics had to replace multiple v-belts when they worked on a car. Today, one belt, called a serpentine belt, replaces these.

The old rule of thumb to determine when to replace a serpentine belt was when a belt had numerous cracks across the different “ribs” per inch of belt. The attached picture shows a belt with numerous cracks per inch. If you don’t address a belt that needs to be replaced, you risk the belt breaking and being stranded on the side of the road. Most serpentine belts will need replacing once every 5 years, depending on the number of kilometres you drive.

In recent years, this has changed. New technology in the rubber used to make serpentine belts keeps them from developing cracks. These belts do need to be replaced, however. The rubber on the belt wears much like a tyre does. Over time, the belt will loose rubber and the gaps between the “ribs” will become deeper. Auto mechanics use a depth gauge to measure the wear of the belt. Trusted repair shops, like Auto Super Shoppe Rangiora, will inform customers when their belt has too much wear and needs to be replaced.

Make sure your automotive repair shop checks your belt(s) at each oil change and advises you of the condition.
