Following on from the previous article…and a short recap.
•We cover the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts, and our free and confidential support is available to all New Zealanders.
•Our ABC:
Advocacy, Budgeting, Credit checks, Debts, E-banking, Financial mentoring, Good choices, Hardship applications, Insolvency, Journey (at your pace), KiwiSaver, Listening, Mortgage, No Asset Procedures, Options, Power providers, Queries, Rates, Savings, Transactions, Unsecured loans, Volatility, Work & Income, Xtra special, You first, Zero-based budgeting.
If you’d like more information, or help with decoding these terms, please call/email/website form/drop-in – we’ll be happy to help.
We work closely with all the local Foodbanks e.g. St Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army, Kaiapoi Community Service, etc. Sometimes one food box will be enough to cover your needs as you get back on your feet. Other times it might be that a few food boxes will enable you to re-direct that “food” money to paying off some smaller bills.
•More wraparound services that we refer clients to:
oCitizens Advice Bureau, Canlaw, Curtain Bank, Community Energy Action (for healthy homes checks and energy advice), Comcare, Cancer Society, Community Wellbeing NC
oDriving Miss Daisy, Generator, St Johns, Nurse Maude
oLibraries - for Skinny Jump (data), digital/mobile/tablet training
oOxford Community Trust
oPerson to Person (depression support)
Far too many to name - Every single agency we work with is truly valued, and we appreciate the help and support they provide for our clients.
Community Education Workshops
•“Let’s Talk About” – 8 x one-hour sessions, covering various “money” topics. These casual “coffee and cake chats” are group lead.
For example, the general chat will start off with “money” and what it means to you. Some people will just listen, others might share their stories.
•“Lifeskills 101” – a half-day session presenting “tasters” of budgeting (why?), debts (good vs bad), Kiwisaver etc.
Previous hosts - The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs Project (Waimakariri and Hurunui), NC Equipment Ltd. and others.
•Individuals, families and groups of friends have requested variations of these workshops = lots of sharing, laughter and fun. If you’d like to get a group together, call us and we’ll facilitate it.
Community Outreach
We run fortnightly “Budgeting Drop-in Clinics” at the following locations:
The Salvation Army Rangiora – next one on the 30th April – 9:30am – 11:30am
CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau) – next one on the 30th April – 9:30am – 11:30am

KCS (Kaiapoi Community Centre) – next one on the 23rd April – 9:30am – 11:30am
No appointment necessary for the “quick question” 10-minute slots.
Following on from the “quick question “a full 1-hour appointment can be made for a later date.

In August 1979, almost 46 years ago, our service was established in Rangiora.
Since then our service has been at the heart of the communities of the Waimakariri and Hurunui. Our free service is available to all New Zealanders.
Our passion is in advising and mentoring individuals, and their families, in creating and maintaining a sustainable budget.
Our wraparound support agencies are just a phone call away. We often refer clients to local support agencies who are better placed to deal with depression, addictions, housing needs, transport issues etc.
However, we’re very good at just listening and holding your hand….especially when you’re having a wobbly moment.
Not knowing where your money is going to and not being able to manage or service your debt (big or small) can be very stressful. Without judgement, our trained, professional Financial Mentors will help and guide you through the process.
Would you like some assistance with any of the following?
•Create a sustainable budget, set realistic and achievable goals. Turning dreams into reality?
•WOFF – Warrant of Financial Fitness – a review of your budget and general advice.
Maybe there are simple ways you could trim your spending or increase your income. Two pairs of eyes are better than one. A huge “well done” if you’re totally on top of it all!
•Compiling a Debts Schedule and a Cashflow will give you a better understanding of your payments and commitments. Knowing (who and what you owe) is better than wondering and stressing because you can’t remember it all.
•A free Credit Check will be another tool we’ll explain to you.
•Learning about Buy Now, Pay Later schemes - the good and the bad. Can you make it work for you?
•Advocacy is an area in which we excel. If you’re having challenging times communicating with various agencies, we will provide the necessary guidance and support. We’ll accompany you to any of the local agencies e.g. W&I.
In any instance, if a deadlock is reached, we will, with your permission, approach the relevant authority or Ombudsman for their assistance.
oMSD/Work & Income
oBanks
oCreditors etc. etc. etc.
oKiwisaver Hardship Withdrawals, Good Shepherd Loans, No Asset Procedures, Debt Repayment Orders, Bankruptcy – After completing a budget worksheet and debt schedule, and, if there are no other options suitable for your situation, we will help you to complete the application.
If you need help with insolvency documents or want to understand your consumer rights, our team of Financial Mentors have the expertise to help you improve your situation.

Sharon Grant, Service Manager of BSNC says: “It’s a real privilege to be able to support families to improve their financial wellbeing. We have received wonderful feedback from people delighted to finally repay long-term debts and who are now able to save for the first time in their lives. Talk to us about your situation, we’d be glad to help you to budget better.”

workandincome.govt.nz...

However, you might be finding the website difficult to navigate, or you’re not sure if you are able to access support at all. You can talk to the great people at Work and Income, and they are only too happy to help.

However, if you want to talk to a Financial Mentor first (it’s free and confidential), we can discuss your particular situation and support you with your conversations with Work and Income.

In some cases we can even accompany you to Work and Income appointments.
Or we can work with you on-line using your own MyMSD Log-in to help you navigate the large amount of information available, and help with filling-in forms.

Our Financial Mentors are friendly, knowledgeable and more than happy to help.

They understand the Work and Income system – and what they don’t know they will certainly find out for you.

If you have money worries, bills you can’t pay, creditors keep phoning demanding payment – or maybe your situation has changed and you would like help to budget for your new circumstances; then contact Budgeting Services North Canterbury.

Budgeting Services North Canterbury is a registered charity and has been working with families and whānau across the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts since 1980.

You’ll always work with a fully qualified Financial Mentor, who provides you with free and confidential advice to support you budget better.

We also offer community education via MoneyMates, where people can talk, share and learn about money.

We provide advocacy services to help negotiate fairer repayment options with creditors. Whether it’s a government department, a bank, or a financial institution, we can advocate on your behalf.

If you need help with insolvency documents or want to understand your consumer rights, our team of Financial Mentors have the expertise to help you improve your situation.

The Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act now requires lenders to implement more stringent lending criteria to ensure that borrowers have the funds to repay their loan.
As a result, lenders are asking for much more detailed information concerning your financial situation.

Our Financial Mentors can help you understand what this means for you, and help you get your paperwork in order.

As lenders will investigate your previous three months’ worth of transactions, through your bank accounts, it is best to come to us well before that so that we can discuss how your spending habits might influence the lender’s decision.
