Poll: Increased speed limits - do we need them?

Annette Lambly-Robinson Reporter from Whangārei Leader

A 110kmh speed limit is to be introduced on some New Zealand roads.

With 245 deaths on our roads already this year, some are asking if more speed is the right answer.

Will an increased speed limit be a good thing for Kiwis?

Vote in the poll and have your say in the comments below.

This mornings tsunami alarms has highlighted there is some confusion about the alarms their location and how they sound, not to mention what to do about it.

Onerahi does have a community response plan. This has been compiled by a small but dedicated group of individuals.

Coincidently this group is getting together this Thursday (17th) to update the response plan and discuss ways to get more awareness of Civil Defence in general.

All residents are welcome to attend and take part.

This mornings incident highlights that many take little interest on the subject but at 1 in the morning with alarms sounding they suddenly wish they had.

Thursday's meeting will be held in the Fire Brigade Station 1 Handforth Street at 7 pm.

Now we are moving into the summer months it is a good time to think about fire safety in the outdoors.

Already we have attended two grass fires, which highlights that regardless of the recent rain fall vegetation is getting drier and in the case of these fires very easily ignited. The wind also helps with rapid spread.

No fire restrictions are yet in place but do keep an eye on public notices and the "having a fire" web site (havingafire.org.nz). Any restrictions or bans will be published. The web site shows a very accurate map of what restrictions apply in each area and further information about permits and BBQ's etc.

In the urban areas of Whangarei do be aware that a permanent restriction is in place on backyard burns. These are Regional Council restrictions to limit air pollution. Permits can be obtained from the Regional council.

As a rule of thumb; season or no fire season outdoor fires always pose some threat of spread so best to not have them if at all possible.

If you do; please ensue you take proper precautions to ensure it is done safely and under the right conditions.
