Whether you want 1 or 1000 hives, beekeeping can be a hugely rewarding hobby. Beehives take time, and they need to be managed carefully, so before you get any hives, you should think about what you want to gain, and what you are willing to put in.

Read, read, read!
Buy or borrow a few good beekeeping books. Practical Beekeeping in New Zealand is a good book to start with.

When to start?
Now! The best time to start a beehive is in the spring. This is when bees are just starting to get busy.

Consider your equipment
If you want your equipment to last it is worth paying a little more for better quality gear that will not fall apart or break. Our $99 Starter Hive is a great place to start – it’s pre-assembled and ready to go.

Have you noticed the poison bait operations in your area?

The Team Reporter from Whangārei Leader

Mt Tiger resident Andrew Randall is concerned the laying of poisoned bait in the area could mean local residents, their animals and pig hunters could unwittingly be eating residual toxins. What do you think? Do you think locals should have more notice about poison operations?

I apologise for posting on the Noticeboard, but there doesn't seem to be a category under Recommendations to recommend a walk.
Yesterday my wife and I walked the Mt Manaia Track. The last time we walked it was 18 months ago, and it looks like DOC has done some more upgrade work since then, because it didn't feel as rugged and strenuous to us as we remembered it.
There is now a beautiful boardwalk around some impressive Kauri trees, see attached photo.
We think that it truly deserves to be one of New Zealand's Great Short Walks. Well done, DOC.
