New research reveals the chances of the South Island’s Alpine Fault generating a damaging earthquake in the next 50 years are much higher than previously thought.
New research led by Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington senior lecturer Dr Jamie Howarth shows the probability of that earthquake occurring before 2068 is about 75 per cent.
Until now, it had been thought to be about 30 per cent, based on sequences of sediment deposited adjacent to the Alpine Fault in northern Fiordland.
Scientists from Victoria University, the University of Otago, GNS Science, the University of California, and the United States Geological Survey also calculated there is about an 82 per cent chance the earthquake will be of magnitude-8 or higher.

Hello lovely neighbours,

Me again :)

My partner and I recently moved into a bus and we as much as we love it we also feel the need to have another space where we can expand a little and use as need be.

What we are after is a little studio/room, can be basic as long as we can throw a couch/bed and a desk in there. We would also like to have street access/a driveway to park the bus, ideally with power/water access.

We are looking anywhere both in town and out of town (Petone or Lower Hutt, as long as it’s on the train line).

We probably wouldn’t be there all the time, basically we would like the option to come and go as we please and use that space as a base.

If anyone could help, I would be forever grateful.

Cheers,
Giulia

The Wellington City Council is prosecuting a driver who allegedly polluted the south coast.

"The irresponsible actions of a driver not securing their load last Friday resulted in thousands of polystyrene balls scattered around the south coast, devastating for the environment and marine life, and frustrating the affected communities. We identified the offender thanks to eagle-eyed locals, and have started the process of fining him $200."
