The Recycle for Sight initiative returns to Upper Hutt Libraries during October. Run by Lions Clubs throughout New Zealand, the initiative calls for donations of old or unwanted eyeglasses and sunglasses, which will be checked and refurbished before being fitted to people in need across the Pacific Islands.
After strong community support for the initiative in 2019, council and Upper Hutt Libraries are hoping that locals will again take the opportunity to make a sustainable choice when decluttering their homes and join the growing recycle and reuse movement in Upper Hutt.
Librarian, Rhea Fohs is hopeful locals will again support the initiative.
“We collected 150 pairs and have our fingers crossed for a similar amazing result during this year’s donation drive.”
* Drop-boxes are available at all branches of Upper Hutt Libraries, including Pūrehurehu, the new mobile library.

The idea has grown from a discussion on Neighbourly to become a fully registered charity with more than 60 volunteers.
The aim is to encourage people to repair items, rather than replacing them.
“Our focus is to educate, popularise repair over replace and divert usable goods from landfill by teaching repair skills in the community through our events," says organiser Lisa Crawford.
On Saturday you will be able to get a coffee from a barista, as well as getting items fixed.
“This Saturday we are planning on the Repair Cafe being twice as big as the first and we are featuring Sewing Machine and Jewellery Repair in addition to our usual repairs.
What you will find at the Upper Hutt Repair Cafe.
- Featuring Sewing Machine and Jewellery Repair (in addition to electrical, mechanical, sewing, bike repair).
- Learn a skill- make a boomerang bag, upcycled cushion cover, kids pyjamas, bunting- using repurposed fabric samples and waste fabrics from our community. Everything provided, all free, no prior experience needed.
- Recycle unfixable goods on-site with Earthlink.
- Earthlink Kids will feature and sell their sustainable kids clothing collection (made from ex-corporate uniforms).
- In partnership with Food 4 Thought, will be collecting donations of small hand/garden tools for upcoming Upper Hutt Tool Library.

The rugby gods weren’t ready for Colin Mataira.
Three times he turned up at their gates on the afternoon of July 11, and three times they sent him back. The 45-year-old father of five, and grandfather of three, to all intents and purposes died three times when his heart stopped on the 10-metre line of a Napier rugby field that day.

The Hyundai Ioniq will join the fleet at Trentham, where the two Delta 7kW slow charging stations are also available for personnel to charge their private EVs. It is part of the Defence Force’s wider programme towards a more sustainable operation, which fits with the Government’s drive to put more EVs on the roads.
The Trentham trial will determine how many chargers might be needed and how best a booking system might work nation-wide.
