Both Michelle Lewis and I spoke to the waste minimisation report and the notice of motion put forward by Councillor Prvanov. We noted that we were still opposed to the closure and there was a depth of feeling in the community regarding the closure. Michelle briefly outlined what a community led initiative would look like. Not the big bin truck dependent operation as run by the council. It is still in the formative stage and SORT welcomes any ideas through this platform. A big thanks to all the people who put the spade work in on this. Michelle for the concept planning along with Councillors Prvanov, Handford, Elliot, Randall.
It seems persistence pays off!!

I was surprised to be asked for my vaccine pass at the local library this weekend. I would have thought public libraries were exempt, along with supermarkets pharmacies etc. They are public spaces afterall, which ratepayers, vaccinated or not, contribute to.
While I appreciate the wishes of Council to keep staff safe, in reality the risk posed by a library visit is low. With over 92% vaccinated in the region, measures such as a limit on numbers, masks, screens and distancing will serve to reduce risk. Im curious what the rationale was for this decision. (Though no doubt if I ask, it will be treated as an OIR request and I'll have to wait until next year for a response). It seems like a step too far to me. What do others think?

Getting It Right - Current Local Stats on Covid Vac

The Mayor of Upper Hutt I am led to believe couldn't get it right a week or so ago when the UHCC slack-on-vax regulations were announced, so I have in my little hot hands the latest Covid vaccinated/unvaccinated stats (as at 6/12/21).

8000 eligible people in the Hutt Valley are unvaccinated.

The HV has 94% at least partially vaccinated and 89% fully vaccinated and these stats makes us almost the exact replication of NZ ( 94 and 88) as a whole.

The best of Upper Hutt is the Trentham area with 94% fully vaccinated and the worse is the Maoribank area with 83% fully vaccinated. But Maoribank is not the worse performing area in the HV - that stat belongs to Delaney Park area, Stokes Valley at around 76% fully vaccinated.

Just under 300,000 eligible people are unvaccinated in NZ
