"North Island saddleback/Tīeke (Philesturnus rufusater) at Bushy Park on 12 July. Not the best shot of a saddleback I've taken, but they can be tricky busy birds, continuously moving in the dark undergrowth, tossing over leaves and dark mysterious lumps looking for tasty ground grubs. They usually only take off into a tree like this when being chased by one of their contemporaries in a noisy altercation about turf. Bird #87 in 2022."

To all those who have already or threaten to boycott The Mall because of recent events and discussions, there is some alternative news here.

All five escalators are now operating which means that the "going up" only ground to first floor moving staircase is now full of movement at full speed.

The Mall does have free parking afterall for 120 minutes as The Mall's own extremely convenient outside (the main entrance) parking area is freely available.

Spoke to a couple of retailers within The Mall who seemed unperturbed and say there is plenty of free parking close by for customers to park their vehicles.

Hello all,
I have very close friends who have been displaced due to the landslip in Stokes Valley. They are very kind and are the first in line to help anyone in need. I now reach out as they are now in need. They are looking for a 3 bedroom house that allows 2 elderly cats (17 years old) as it seems they may be out of home for approx 3-6 months minimum until EQC, Council, Insurance company come to an agreement on next steps. They are not allowed to enter their house as it has a temporary red sticker placed on it. If anyone can help please reach out. Also there has been a give a little page started to help them get through this:

"I am small but mighty, full of excitement and curiosity for life. I am sure to make a great addition to a lucky household. My siblings and I have been fostered until we were big enough and old enough to find homes. We have been able to have a start in a home environment before coming back to SPCA for rehoming. As I am still young, I will need a home where I am not left alone for more than a few hours this is until I am older and settled into my new home. I am super social and love having a good play so I could go to a home with an existing gentle dog, or a confident cat. I still have a lot to learn so would love a home that has the time and patience to enroll me in puppy school, this is to help me become the best companion I know I can be."

Didn't think quick enough late yesterday afternoon. Perhaps it was the cold weather or a Corgi that just wanted to keep going.

Walking past a little 9-10 year old, innocent-looking bare footed and thin school green coloured shirted sleeveless boy who was favouring his arm and shoulder and crying and shivering. So I enquired if he was alright and he shyly said no. He said he had been kicked out of his home after he agreed with me his father had bashed him. Later he said his mother was also at home. He denied he had done anything wrong. He said he had nowhere to go and no close by people he knew.

I told him that he should talk to a teacher that he likes at his school and the teacher will surely do something for him because most teachers are good like that and they have contact details and maybe history.

I was about to take him to my home get him warmed and drive him to his home. But I hesitated. Later my wife said if I had brought a complete stranger child home I could have been accused of being involved in pedophilia.

I chose not to walk with him to his home and confront a maybe vicious, drugged parent and later the child would probably suffer the consequences for bringing another person into the "fray".

Maybe he was not guiltless as he said and looked and did do something to raise the ire of his parent/s. But of course physical reaction on children is outlawed in NZ.

I suppose I could have phoned the police and wait around for ages for them to turn up. In the end I left the poor kid sitting on the wet grass underneath a Totara tree in The Reserve.
