At that time we noticed how few birds there were in our area which is in the Papamoa area closer to Girven Road and there are less birds now. A few minutes ago we noticed a dead wax eye on a neighbours drive. Does anyone know if the appropriate govt department was notified or if there was any scientific answer given. Cats are not the blame for these deaths.

Mark Elliott from Shirley in Christchurch has won the category of Best Loved Lawn for his lush green masterpiece. Congratulations, Mark!

We spoke with his about his process to keep his lawn beautiful and there may be some blades of advice for your own backyard.

Mark has a huge backyard so during Covid times, he decided to renovate the lawn and garden just for something to do. It’s turned into a passion.

His lawn is 100% rye grass - sourced from Prebble Seeds Turf World who supply many golf courses around New Zealand. In the summer he mows it every 2-3 days, sometimes daily, and waters the lawn with a deep soak of about an hour at a time, 2-3 times a week. He uses a granular slow release lawn fertiliser and other liquid fertilisers also.

Mark shares:
'I would say the secret to getting a good lawn is consistent mowing - at least twice a week. Maybe buy a bulk bag of slow release lawn fertiliser from a wholesaler. Keep the grass longer and just take the very top off the blade when you mow. It promotes growth, thickens it up and will really help with stopping weeds - oh, and water. Expect a water bill if you want a good lawn.'

The first photo below shows the 'Before' shot, 4 years ago. Give Mark a Like on this post if you think his lawn is pretty top notch!

It's a debate that resurfaces each year as weather hits its peak just as kids head back to school.
Traditionally, we've paired the school holidays in NZ with the Christmas period, but would a shift to February make more sense for everyone?

If you’ve ever toured the model homes in a new home community, you will understand that interiordecorating is an art.
It’s not just the tastefully designed furniture and accessories that create the perfect room, the placement of these elements has a great deal to do with the overall appeal of a design

Here are a few things to keep in mind when planning your furniture arrangement.👀

Determine how you’ll use the room:

What is the purpose of the room? 📺

Create zones in the room and arrange the furniture to delineate them

Set the sofa 🛋️ to face the TV and then create a separate area with comfy chairs, for those solitary moments you spend reading or conversing one-on-one.

Determine a focal point

Where is your eye drawn when you enter the room? This is the room’s focal point. Typical spots to create this point include a fireplace or large window with a view.

If the room lacks a natural focal point, create one by painting a wall in an accent colour or using a piece of artwork or furniture, such as a bookcase.

Create traffic flow

Make sure you don’t crowd the entryways to the room with furniture pieces. Make it easy to enter and exit the room

Once inside the room, there should be enough room to walk through it without bumping into or having to manoeuvre around furniture

Keep furniture to scale

Oversized furniture in small rooms not only disrupts traffic flow, but may obliterate the room’s focal point, making the room feel even smaller than it is

The same can be said for large rooms with dinky furniture
The size of your furniture should match the size of the room.
