The presenter was one of the owners & it was interesting to hear about the difficulties & highs of setting up a winery from scratch while having a family. They have the oldest syrah vines in NZ & we were impressed with their wines.
We then went to TRINITY HILL, which has been a favourite for a long time. The first presentation was not quite up to their normal standard, but the second was very good. Previously, we have been spoiled by having an enthused John Hancock leaping up & down & excitedly promoting his wines. The usual biking wine enthusiasts were there at the same time as we were. We never understand how they get back home safely after a day of imbibing!
If you love wine, as said in a previous post, the winery you must visit, is DE LA TERRE, Hawke’s Bay’s only earth-brick winery & cellar door.
Tony Prichard was the original Chief Wine-maker at Church Road & while there, worked with consultants from Domaine Cordier in Bordeaux. He is Mr Everything: he grows grapes, picks, processes, bottles & labels & imparts his immense knowledge & passion enthusiastically when you visit. His wife, Kaye, produces delectable food for your enjoyment!
“Our hand-crafted approach goes right through the winemaking process – from hand-picking all the fruit, through gentle handling at the winery using traditional winemaking techniques. Nothing is rushed and with the emphasis on minimal handling, every effort is made to retain the integrity and concentration of the fruit and our unique terroir. The wines are a fusion of high-tech winemaking knowledge with traditional hands-on winemaking methods in the cellar.”
The wines range from those you will have tasted before to the more unusual such as Tannat (good for yuur heart), Barbera & Noble Viognier.
Robyn Magowan, a tour participant stated:”De la terre was amazing in what they have achieved. Had a point of difference with their earthy approach and utter understanding of wine making. Lovely lunch as well.”
And Lorraine Weenink: "In regards to the beautiful Blanc de Blanc that we had and the way he opened it with a scary looking sabre lol Plus the lunch was excellent & how he built the winery with earth bricks & how passionate & interesting he was about wine."
MOANA PARK was a winery that seemed to cater to the locals as a drop in for a glass (of wine or beer) with the kids. We felt a bit sorry for the earnest & well-meaning young presenter as we were all tired at the end of a long day & no-one enthused about the wines the wines.

Matthew showed us around the exterior of the venue & told us its history. We had a tasting outside before moving into the venue & having a further tasting in the barrel room. The wines here have a proven international track record & were partaken of enthusiastically!
At mid-day, we had an excellent tasting & lunch at BLACK BARN. We had the tasting on arrival & enjoyed the award-winning wines, The lunch choices were many & varied, on the first trip but the service, though good, was slow., because of the school holidays We had a schedule to which we had to adhere, so we were very grateful that, on our second trip, things were changed & we were given a delicious 2-course menu ( Entree & Main),
SMITH & SHETH is a venue of which many have not heard. Each year since 2008, the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association has hired Sydney-based Master of Wine, Andrew Caillard, to choose his top syrah and blended red wines from a single vintage. His latest selection features wines from the 2018 vintage.

Of the 6 syrah chosen for the 2018 Vintage Selection, two were from Smith &Sheth - The CRU Heretaunga Syrah & the S&S Cru Omaha Syrah. The presenters here were a wealth of knowledge & had been sommeliers. It waswas an outstanding presentation.

We had green olives provided & were told that they make you salivate, which improves your tasting.

PARITUA WINERY has only recently opened its cellar door.Their greatest strength is in Bordeaux-style red wines. With the help of a high-tech digital sorting machine that photographs every berry, rejecting those with imperfections, Paritua seems to be able to make good wines from challenging vintages such as 2018 and 2016, from which others would quail

It was worth visiting this stylish, modern winery’s recently-opened cellar door and many added their name to the mailing list. The bus was a bit heavier when we left this venue.

How did our two consecutive tours to Napier go?
We had a delicious lunch at our first winery, LINDEN ESTATE. We were given 3 courses from which to choose 2. Hard to pick! Entrée: Pan-seared prawns bound in a rose sauce or warm lamb salad with crispy bacon & basil pesto. Mains: a choice from Pork Belly, Duck Confit or Fish of the Day. Dessert: New York Brownie or Sticky Date Pudding. We had a good tasting with plenty of humour to entertain us. Because we had program time constraints & people wanted to buy wine here, we arranged to pop back in en route for home on Sunday.
We have visited CRAB FARM several times before & liked their wines. A bit disappointing this time. Some bought their port.

We finished Day 1 at CJ Pask. This older winery has consistently quality wines & the tasting was well received.

The first group were lucky to get good weather; this week's group had snow on the hills & cold temperatures.

Why not treat yourself to a bloke’s day out for a grooming WOF? Just be wary of the barbershop – between the bay rum oil, hot towels, banter, and leather chairs, you won’t want to leave!

Bevis, a resident at Ryman’s Anthony Wilding Village, recently received a gentleman’s makeover. The day began at the barbershop where Bevis and his barber Kohl shared plenty of laughs. Next up, a personal stylist helped Bevis select clothes he looked and felt great in. Being pampered isn’t the norm for Bevis but based on his smile, we’re confident he loved every minute.
