The facility was planned for in Taupō District Council’s annual plan this year, with a budget of $1.7 million. A further $300,000 has been secured from a BayTrust grant that will bring the total budget to $2 million.
The project is currently going through the design of the building in consultation with land owners Ngati Turangitukua and main users of the park including representatives from rugby and equestrian clubs. A steering group, including representatives from Ngati Turangitukua and the Turangi Tongariro Community Board has been established to oversee the project.
Chairman of Ngati Turangitukua Maori Committee Jeff Bennett said he was pleased iwi was able to partner with the council to make the project happen.
“Our Turangi community has been without a sports facility at Turangitukua Park for generations of children growing up in our town,” he said. “This meant our sports teams have been unable to host events and visiting teams in the manner that they would like to. We therefore see the sports facility as essential for our community and I praise Mayor David and his team for turning our hopes into reality.”
He said it was a great testament to the town’s community spirit that a joint approach to BayTrust from Ngati Turangitukua, the council, Tongariro Sports and Turangi Dambusters rugby league club obtained $300,000 of extra funding for the project.
Project sponsor John Ridd said the council and Ngati Turangitukua were working closely to come up with a suitable design that would suit a large number of users.
“This is going to be a fantastic community asset that is shaped by the Turangi community and used by a great number of community groups and sports teams,” he said. “Although still in the planning stages, it’s very exciting and we are looking forward to being able to show the community the ideas the group has come up with.”
He said it was hugely generous of Ngati Turangitukua, as landowners, to allow use of the reserve for public benefit. “This will be an excellent asset the community can take pride in. We are looking forward to working with Ngati Turangitukua to get started on the build,” Mr Ridd said.
Many Turangi residents and ratepayers had long held the desire for a purpose-built sports facility at the town’s major sportsground of Turangitukua Park. Some temporary changing rooms built at the site in 2019 had been useful but were not intended to be permanent and did not satisfy all the needs of the community, he said.
“The new sports facility, once built, will be able to host visiting sports teams, provide shelter in poor weather and create a space for community groups to use, too,” Mr Ridd said.
The location of the sports facility will be easily accessible, close to the two playing fields and car parks. It is hoped construction will start in spring of this year.

As the market gets harder and harder to break into, we've been hearing more and more about people trying to make a personal connection with vendors to give their tender offers the edge. We've heard folks will include personal details about their family, why the love the house and what their plans for the property are.

Evacuate these areas even if you did not feel the earthquake. DO NOT WAIT. A damaging tsunami is possible.
People in all other areas who felt a LONG or STRONG earthquake should MOVE IMMEDIATELY to the nearest high ground, out of tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible.
This evacuation advice overrides the current COVID-19 Alert Level requirements. Do not stay at home. MOVE IMMEDIATELY. Stay 2 metres away from others if you can and if it is safe to do so.
People evacuating should walk, run or cycle if possible to reduce chance of getting stuck in traffic. Do not return until all-clear is given by Civil Defence.

The pool is scheduled to close at 2pm on Sunday, March 21 and reopen on Tuesday, March 30 at 6am when the complex opens.
About a million litres of water will have to be pumped out of the leisure pool to allow the first major maintenance and closure at the AC Baths since its refurbishment in 2013.
Business operations manager Scott Attenborough said the work would encompass replacing all the tiles around the bombing island and on the entry stairs, replacing disintegrating lining in the “water overflow” areas of the pool, the repair of pipes and valves and the cleaning and inspection of areas inaccessible when the pool is full.
He said two lanes of the outdoor 25m pool would be opened for public and leisure use from 10.30am to 3.30pm and from 6pm to closing each day during the closure to allow a space for leisure pool activity while avoiding peak outdoor 25m lane pool times.
“It’s unfortunate we need to shut the leisure pool for ten days to complete this work – but the silver lining is a refreshed, functional leisure pool at the end of it where everything is in working order,” he said. “The most visible result will be at the bombing island, where tiles are in a state of disrepair.”
The maintenance was originally scheduled for mid to late 2020, but emergency work on the indoor 25m pool took precedence last year so the leisure pool maintenance was moved to March of this year. The closure timing was to avoid school holidays and have the work completed when the weather was likely to be fairly dry.
The learn-to-swim pool, indoor and outdoor 25m pools and saunas would remain open. All aqua shallow classes normally held in the leisure pool from Monday March 22 to Monday March 29 had been cancelled and would resume Wednesday, March 31 as per the timetable. There would be no change to the aqua deep classes, which would be held as normal in the indoor 25m pool.
The maintenance has been planned and budgeted for in the Long-term Plan 2018-2028.
