Are you a local business based in Hope or the surrounding area? Every year Hope School holds a Country Fair to raise funds for the running of our small school. At this popular event we have a Silent Auction where we auction off goods and services kindly donated by the community.

Our fair is coming up on 22nd September. We thought Neighbourly could be a good way of reaching out to local businesses who we otherwise may not have contacted.

If you are able to support us in our Silent Auction, by making a donation of goods or services or a voucher that we could auction off, we would really appreciate if you could get in touch with us via Neighbourly or by calling Hope School on 03 544 8427. It is a great way of advertising for business in the local community, and funds raised will be used to provide our students with experiences and resources such as trips out, visitors into school, library visits and support staff.

We greatly appreciate the generosity of local businesses and advertise this generosity before and during our event.

Many thanks for your support!

Plastic Nelson Mail Bags

We are now using our own bags for groceries but a bit difficult to do this for our paper! These bags are now our main amount of soft plastic rubbish .Its called Nelson Mail but it comes in a thick plastic bag that is too tough to open without a knife, and to my mind, why not put it in the Mailbox like they used to and save the planet and the expense. There response will probably be that its not feasible to do this when the delivery is from a car.Tough titty , bring the paper boys back as it used to be and save the planet again.

We must not be judgemental

Miriam Gratton from

Everyone has something going on in their life. Just because we can't see it, or feel it. We mustn't judge. A smile or a hello, would you like a chat or a cuppa, helps more than you realise. Just company, is important.

Severe infections of myrtle rust could kill affected susceptible plants and have long-term impacts on the regeneration of young plants and seedlings. A Ministry of Primary Industries surveillance team found the new infections on four sites in the area recently.

The airborne disease has spread from the North Island and was found in the South Island in Collingwood, Golden Bay earlier this year. Myrtle rust affects plants in the myrtle family, which includes pohutukawa, manuka, rata, kanuka, swamp maire and ramarama, as well as commercially-grown species such as eucalyptus, feijoa and New Zealand cranberry.

The spores are thought to have crossed the Tasman Sea from Australia to New Zealand on wind currents. Over the long term, 10 to 20 years, myrtle rust could affect iconic New Zealand plants including pōhutukawa, mānuka, rātā, kānuka, swamp maire and ramarama, as well as commercially-grown species such as eucalyptus and feijoa.

Severe infections could kill affected susceptible plants and have long-term impacts on the regeneration of young plants and seedlings.
