This is our only chance to influence the outcome of this development by persuading the Minister for the Environment (who makes the final decision on the plan change) to protect the unique values of the Taupō Swamp and wetlands in the area. We will have to live with the decisions made now in perpetuity.

At this week’s meeting, we had an unscheduled and emotional farewell ceremony for Chilean exchange student Cris Suarez. His return home after a year with us has been uncertain because of Covid-19, but now he is due to leave on Friday, on a repatriation flight.
Cris said his exchange has changed … View moreAt this week’s meeting, we had an unscheduled and emotional farewell ceremony for Chilean exchange student Cris Suarez. His return home after a year with us has been uncertain because of Covid-19, but now he is due to leave on Friday, on a repatriation flight.
Cris said his exchange has changed his life-which is what student exchanges are designed to do - and he was very appreciative of the support and friendship he received via the Club. He has taken full advantage of his stay in New Zealand and for the first time tried golf, fishing, bungee-jumping, water-skiing, and the haka.
He has met people from all over the world and made many new friends.
On our part, Cris has been a model exchange student: energetic, amiable, and cooperative. He is a fine young man with a bright future and I am sure we will see him again.
President Euon presented our brilliant soccer-playing international student, Cris with a hoodie and scarf from the Wellington Phoenix Football Club. and to top it off, and because none of the beanies is available in Wellington at the moment, a beanie, knitted by Barbara Nichols at very short notice. The photo says it all!

Matthew is familiar with our Club, having addressed us three or four times in the past. He is a long-time friend of the Bright family, as a result of Beryl Bright taking him under her wing when she worked at the Beehive and Matthew was a wannabe speechwriter. Matthew began by paying a generous tribute to Beryl and our late friend and member, George.
He comes from a privileged Remuera background and has been immersed in politics since university, with occasional forays into the consulting world.
Matthew reflected on political change in New Zealand; once our parliament was dominated by businessmen and ex-unionists and younger politicians wanted to change the world. Now he sees the younger element as celebrities with no firm political views.
He is an old friend of Todd Muller, with whom he went back-packing in India long ago. He obviously has a high regard for his new boss and thinks he will make a great Prime Minister one day.
Rotary clubs have been described as “The National Party at lunch”, but on this occasion Matthew found the going rather tough, and his over-the-top electioneering grated on some members., political commentator and now aide to the newly-elected leader of the opposition, Todd Muller.
