Produced and directed by filmmaker Jade Jackson, who grew up in Porirua, Raids will make its debut at Te Rauparaha Arena on 28 August.
Filmed entirely at a house in Cannons Creek, the seven minute long film tells the story of a family impacted by the raids carried out at dawn or late at night by National and Labour governments on homes, workplaces and churches between 1974 and 1976, as officials searched for people who had overstayed their visas. Raids is set in 1975 and centres around the impact of one such raid through the eyes of a young girl, Losa, and her father, Lupematasila.
They particularly targeted people from the Pacific Islands, even though statistics showed the vast majority of overstayers were actually from Europe and the United States. On 1 August 2021, the New Zealand Government issued an unreserved apology for the “discriminatory implementation of immigration laws that led to the raids”. Support for Pacific artists and historians to develop a comprehensive oral and written account of this dark piece of New Zealand’s history have been offered as part of the apology.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker says the Council is proud to support and screen Raids, supporting local stories being told on the big screen, especially something that has resonance with people in this community. “These raids cast a shadow over Porirua’s shared history, so bringing that into the light can help with healing.” Raids will be shown in the small stadium at the Arena, with the evening’s festivities kicking off at 6pm. It will be MC’d by Beastmoze and attendees will be greeted with a fiery performance by Tautua Dance outside, followed by speeches inside by Ms Jackson and Mayor Baker. The film will start just after 7pm.

"My ideal home would be one with a nice backyard, that is big enough for me to explore and potter around in the sun as I love toasting myself on a sunny day. I enjoy my daily walks so would love a family that would be keen to go out, explore with me and show me all the wonderful things out there. I have lots of love to give and like to be with my people. I LOVE food but this love and nose can sometimes get me into trouble. As I want to keep all the cuddles and tummy rubs for myself I am looking for a home as an only dog. Don't be fooled by my size, I can be cheeky and have jumped fences before, so am needing a home that has high fencing. I could live with older kids that are confident around big boisterous ladies like myself. I'm a real sweet heart waiting for a family to pick me. So if you think I'm the girl for you please contact us."

"There have been some epic grey warbler/riroriro (Gerygone igata) battles in the back garden the past couple of weeks – well, as epic as it gets for something that weighs in at 6g. What I assume are three males have been wittering away and chasing each other around quite a small area when they disagree about who won the singing competition – little flashes of aerodynamic grey fluff battling for supremacy of the Acer palmatum conveniently sandwiched between a camellia, a kowhai, and a robust trellis covered in potato vine they seem to like climbing in. Having grey warblers in permanent residence here in Woburn, Lower Hutt is quite new (at least in my garden), with them only having turned up earlier this year. I hope they don’t exhaust themselves before they get to do any actual courting. This was taken last week, it is pouring with rain today so a temporary cease fire has been called. Fingers crossed they nest here."

The Rotary Clubs of Porirua and Porirua City Council presented the Primary School Leadership Awards to 61 local school children at a ceremony at Elim Church.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker, and Rotary District Governor Mark Wheeler presented the awards and gave each student a Rotary International theme pin for 2021-2022.
Mayor Anita Baker said she was impressed with how these young award recipients lead by example to make a positive change in their schools and community.
"Our tamariki in Porirua are truly inspiring and I’m so proud to be here today. Thank you for all you do for others, for giving your time and talents to help others and being positive role models in our community, I believe the future of Porirua is in good hands."
The President of the Rotary Club of Plimmerton, Kay Phillips agreed. “One of the many things that I love about the Primary School Leadership Awards is that we get to showcase some of the wonderful talent in Porirua schools.”
She said that the Rotary International theme for this year is 'Serve to Change Lives'.
“I believe that is what our young people being honoured today, are doing – you serve within your school to change the lives of all students for the better.”
Children’s Commissioner, Judge Andrew Becroft, spoke at the event about the impact of their leadership.
“You are the leaders of today. Not just the leaders of tomorrow. You have the opportunity to change the way Aotearoa values young people now. Your character is the starting point.”
The children were selected by principals from primary schools throughout Porirua. Two senior students from each school were chosen based on leadership, service above self, and being role models.
The students had been involved in a range of activities including sports, kapa haka, dance, community work, academic pursuits, environmental efforts and supporting and caring for other students.
Wendy Betteridge, the Project Leader for the Awards, read through all of the young leaders’ citations prior to the presentations. She commented that she was overwhelmed by what she read and reflected on where their amazing leadership skills and evidence of service will take them in future years.
A list of recipients is attached.
For a testimonial on each student, or other queries, please contact Wendy Betteridge at Rotary on 021 417576 or wendy@lastingimpact.co.nz
