Our speaker this week was Marilyn Garson, a Canadian-born New Zealander who has spent many years in the world’s worst trouble spots, trying to bring relief to communities devastated by war.

… View moreOur speaker this week was Marilyn Garson, a Canadian-born New Zealander who has spent many years in the world’s worst trouble spots, trying to bring relief to communities devastated by war.
Since 2011 she has been in Gaza, and stayed on with the UN after the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas.
The Gaza Strip is an enclave 41Km long bordered by Egypt, Israel, and the Mediterranean. Its population is over 2 million, Palestinian, and nearly all are Sunni Muslims. Over one million of them are refugees registered with the UN.
In effect, Gaza is the state of Palestine, which came into existence after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. The history of this region has been one of endless conflict, originally tribal (see the Old Testament for details), and more recently involving the Western Powers who were interested in oil and the security of the Suez canal, and to atone for the Holocaust.
Israel’s desire to secure and expand on its western border has pressed the fast-growing Palestinian population into Gaza, and to control life in Gaza via a stringent blockade. Egypt has collaborated by blockading its shorter border in the south.
Marilyn explained how the blockade works. Food, water, medical supplies and other necessities of life all pass through one gate in the in the boundary wall. This leads to poverty, and half the population needs food from relief agencies.
There have been outbreaks of violence, notably in 2014, when rockets and ordnance have been fired from Gaza into Israel and vice versa. The conflict has been one-sided, leading to the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians, including children. Nowhere is safe in Gaza.
The political situation is dire. The general policy of other governments is to provide passive humanitarian relief, but not to confront Israel, in whose hands the solution lies.
Although Marilyn sees no long-term strategy on the part of Israel, she believes opinion is shifting, and Israel may one day bow to international pressure, much as the South Africans did on the question of apartheid.

SUPPORTED LIVING NEEDED BUT NOT REALLY?
We are seeking a whānau / family or single person who is open to welcoming our amazing 18-year-old girl into their home and life. This is a unique situation where she is now of an age where she needs to move forward and beyond foster care. BUT she still needs to be cared for and about, like any other 18-year-old. She is an exceptional young woman, and you could make the difference for her.
This is what she has told us to share with you:
I have just turned 18 and spent most of my life in care. I am told I am brave, funny, kind, thoughtful, a bit complicated, and focussed. I can be very mature but am also anxious about what is ahead of me. I love my whakapapa and keen to learn more. I am affectionate and caring. I am intelligent and capable but have so much to learn in life and I find this scary.
I want to be fully independent one day, but I am not quite ready for that just yet. I have missed a lot of the things that get us ready as children, to become independent but I am proud of how much I have achieved (as are my foster parents!). I am working part time in Porirua; I have my own car. I am good at spending time alone at home and am trustworthy. I am learning to cook; I take care of my personal space and am getting better at managing my own money as I know I will need to pay board and bills. I have pets that I adore – 3 little mice and a bird who I love and who I take full personal responsibility for. I really hope they can come with me to my next home.
Our girl is looking for a family to call her own and a place to call her home. She wants to feel welcomed into a whānau so she can prepare for independence and when she does leave home, she feels she can always come back if she needs advice, to attend family events like Christmas and birthdays, and those family dinners! She is open to living with a couple, a family with other children (preferably older children), or a single person. While she can take care of herself extremely well, she needs a caring eye to watch out for her and guide her.
It is important to her that she is noticed, and you are genuinely interested in her and her future and that you commit to her long term. Remember, she wants a warm genuine long-term connection that is ‘not’ a job for someone.

We are seeking committed, passionate, energetic, and grounded youth mentors to support our young people aged 12 to 16 in foster care during and after school, and on weekends. Number of hours vary.
Can you set boundaries and stick to them? Provide outstanding role modelling to young people? Be highly self-motivated? Be ready for a prompt start? Do you have the energy to spend one on one time with an individual young person and provide positive influence? Our young people have had many challenges in life, not of their doing, and this means they struggle to find their place in the world. Our mentors are their to support them as they find their way.
You will need:
- A full driver’s license.
- Your own car/car insurance.
- To pass police and Oranga Tamariki checks
- Knowledge of supporting youth who have challenges.

A new app for your phone that highlights walking trails and Porirua’s history has been launched to celebrate Heritage Week, and there are two free tours to sate your interest in the city’s past.
The Discover Porirua app is available to download via the Google Play and App Store for your … View moreA new app for your phone that highlights walking trails and Porirua’s history has been launched to celebrate Heritage Week, and there are two free tours to sate your interest in the city’s past.
The Discover Porirua app is available to download via the Google Play and App Store for your mobile phone. In it, there are more than 30 places to walk or places of interest in the city, including Battle Hill Farm, Te Aro Piko, Gear Homestead, Whitireia Park and Pātaka.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker says downloading the app is an excellent way to learn more about the city, and you’ll be surprised what you didn’t know.
“Porirua has a rich history and there’s many places to find information – but this app is a great way to start.
“Walk the heritage trails of Pāuatahanui, Pukerua Bay or Plimmerton. There’s so much rich heritage to our city, so get out there and explore it.”
The app will be officially launched at Pātaka, at 5pm on Tuesday 26 October.
On Saturday 30 October there are two free community tours by local experts in Pukerua Bay (10.30am) and Plimmerton (10.30am and 2pm). Each takes about an hour, involves walking, and you can learn about the history of each village, including rail, and check out key heritage sites.
Both have limited places – email plimmertonra@gmail.com for the Plimmerton tour, and pukeruaheritage@gmail.com for the Pukerua Bay tour, where you will receive information on where to meet and Covid-19 protocol for attending.
There is also a talk at Pātaka from Te Rauparaha Horomona on the Whiti Te Rā exhibition, the story of Ngāti Toa Rangatira, on Sunday 31 October at 11am.
Next week, guided walks will take place around the St Alban’s Church grave site in Pāuatahanui as part of Cemeteries Week and there will be a celebration in Pukerua Bay on 6 November to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the opening of Centennial Highway.
