New Zealand is now in a nationwide level 4 lockdown, with a total of five Covid-19 cases in the community confirmed to be the more transmissible Delta variant.

The four new cases announced Wednesday morning were all linked to the 58-year-old Devonport man – a tradesman – who tested positive on Tuesday. The four include a colleague of the man and close contacts, including a nurse who works at Auckland hospital.
The entire country is at the highest alert level for at least three days while Auckland and Coromandel, where the man spent the weekend, are at level 4 for at least seven days. A list of locations of interest can be found here.
Level 4 means it’s likely that the disease is not contained.

Testing and vaccinations

A full list of community testing centres can be found here. If you think you need a test, call Healthline first on 0800 358 5453. If you get tested, stay home until you have a negative test result. There is no charge to get a test, regardless of your citizenship, immigration status, nationality or medical insurance.
You will need to supply contact details to get a test. A National Health Index (NHI) number is good to have but not crucial.
The most common test is a swab to the back of your nose, which some people describe as a “tickle” and others say is “uncomfortable.”

The vaccination programme has been put on hold for 48 hours. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it was to ensure the safety of frontline health workers, as officials tried to get to grips with how wide the latest community case may have spread.

Stay at home

People are instructed to stay home in their bubble other than for essential movement. Safe recreational activity is allowed in the local area but, given the Delta variant is suspected, even more caution is recommended from others to limit transmission.

Locally made Dawn Raids short film to screen in Porirua

The subject matter of a short film that will have its first screening in Porirua could be close to the heart of many in our city.

Produced and directed by filmmaker Jade Jackson, who grew up in Porirua, Raids will make its debut at Te Rauparaha Arena on 28 August.

Filmed entirely at a house in Cannons Creek, the seven minute long film tells the story of a family impacted by the raids carried out at dawn or late at night by National and Labour governments on homes, workplaces and churches between 1974 and 1976, as officials searched for people who had overstayed their visas. Raids is set in 1975 and centres around the impact of one such raid through the eyes of a young girl, Losa, and her father, Lupematasila.

They particularly targeted people from the Pacific Islands, even though statistics showed the vast majority of overstayers were actually from Europe and the United States. On 1 August 2021, the New Zealand Government issued an unreserved apology for the “discriminatory implementation of immigration laws that led to the raids”. Support for Pacific artists and historians to develop a comprehensive oral and written account of this dark piece of New Zealand’s history have been offered as part of the apology.

Porirua Mayor Anita Baker says the Council is proud to support and screen Raids, supporting local stories being told on the big screen, especially something that has resonance with people in this community. “These raids cast a shadow over Porirua’s shared history, so bringing that into the light can help with healing.” Raids will be shown in the small stadium at the Arena, with the evening’s festivities kicking off at 6pm. It will be MC’d by Beastmoze and attendees will be greeted with a fiery performance by Tautua Dance outside, followed by speeches inside by Ms Jackson and Mayor Baker. The film will start just after 7pm.

"My ideal home would be one with a nice backyard, that is big enough for me to explore and potter around in the sun as I love toasting myself on a sunny day. I enjoy my daily walks so would love a family that would be keen to go out, explore with me and show me all the wonderful things out there. I have lots of love to give and like to be with my people. I LOVE food but this love and nose can sometimes get me into trouble. As I want to keep all the cuddles and tummy rubs for myself I am looking for a home as an only dog. Don't be fooled by my size, I can be cheeky and have jumped fences before, so am needing a home that has high fencing. I could live with older kids that are confident around big boisterous ladies like myself. I'm a real sweet heart waiting for a family to pick me. So if you think I'm the girl for you please contact us."

"There have been some epic grey warbler/riroriro (Gerygone igata) battles in the back garden the past couple of weeks – well, as epic as it gets for something that weighs in at 6g. What I assume are three males have been wittering away and chasing each other around quite a small area when they disagree about who won the singing competition – little flashes of aerodynamic grey fluff battling for supremacy of the Acer palmatum conveniently sandwiched between a camellia, a kowhai, and a robust trellis covered in potato vine they seem to like climbing in. Having grey warblers in permanent residence here in Woburn, Lower Hutt is quite new (at least in my garden), with them only having turned up earlier this year. I hope they don’t exhaust themselves before they get to do any actual courting. This was taken last week, it is pouring with rain today so a temporary cease fire has been called. Fingers crossed they nest here."
