This month we’re rolling up our sleeves, putting up our hands, and saying ‘YES’ to giving our time and skills to projects that make Aotearoa a better place to live.

As a mostly volunteer led organisation, our members know first hand the value and impact that a single volunteer can make in our communities. Imagine then how much can be achieved when several volunteers or even an entire street or neighbourhood decide to work together to achieve the same goal!

Whether you plan to coordinate your own volunteer driven activity, take part in one that’s already been setup, participate in National Volunteer Week (16-22 June), or simply show your own volunteers some extra love this month, know that every bit of effort to give back is a priceless investment in all of our futures.

Want to share your thoughts?

Let us know how you’re getting involved this month by tagging us in your posts + using the following hashtag so we can see what you get up to:

Deputy Mayor Terry Sloan has visited the new Ōpaoa River Bridge site to see the project’s progress.

An NZTA project team has been busy installing the main piles to support the bridge and driving seven large steel cylinders 26 metres into the ground, which will be filled with reinforced concrete.

Over the next few months, columns will be constructed and 72 concrete beams trucked from Christchurch will be craned into place.

Discussions are also underway with mana whenua iwi Rangitāne, Ngāti Rārua and Ngāti Toa on landscaping the new entrance into town.

The new bridge is expected to open in mid-2020.

Last year alone, 427 serious injuries claims were made to ACC because of crashes and driving incidents over this long weekend.

Let's make sure we all arrive alive to where we need to go by following these four simple and proven road safety actions:

- Make sure everyone has their seatbelts on
- Remove distractions and stay focused on driving
- Don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking or are tired
- Drive at a safe speed for the conditions

With severe and changeable weather forecast for across the country the following winter driving tips are equally important as well.

The only way we can reduce unnecessary road deaths and injuries is by working together to be safe, considerate and alert on the roads. If you spot dangerous driving behaviour or urgent but not life threatening driving incidents you can report it to the New Zealand Police by calling *555 for free from any mobile device.

Have a great long weekend!

“The Tuia 250 Voyage Trainee programme is an exciting chance not only to learn about ancient voyaging traditions, sailing and navigation, but also to be part of a commemoration which celebrates New Zealand’s rich voyaging heritage,” Ms Cavanagh says.
“Tuia 250 Trainees, including young people nominated through schools, will be given the chance to have an unforgettable voyaging experience, and at the same time learn about our history and take that back to their communities.
“I encourage all curious and adventurous New Zealanders to apply for the Tuia 250 Voyage Trainee programme,” Ms Cavanagh says.
The programme has spots available for 450 New Zealanders, 250 of those will be allocated by region to ensure this is an opportunity open to all. There are also berths available for 200 students aged 14 – 18. Schools will nominate students for three types of voyages.
The Tuia 250 Voyage will travel to 15 sites around the country from October to December this year. Voyage legs range from overnight to 15 days.
