From joyous celebrations like weddings and birthdays, to solemn gatherings for farewells; Hakaru Community Hall stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its community.
The hall has been the heart of Hakaru for nearly a century and recently underwent a refresh to meet the changing needs of the community with funding support from Te Puna Tahua Lottery Grants Board.
“The grant has been huge in helping us make improvements, including the installation of a new entrance and upgrading of some of our older amenities,” says Secretary Dennis Reeve.
Over the years, the Hall has witnessed generations come together in times of happiness and sorrow and symbolises more than just a space, it’s a bond that unites the Hakaru community.
The grant also recently helped the hall committee to expand its offerings from hosting dance, yoga, and pilates classes to providing a space for local musicians to practice.
With every step forward, Hakaru Hall is committed to fostering connection, culture, and community spirit for another century to come with the help of local grants.
This is just one of the incredible causes keeping our heritage alive, with 100% of Lotto New Zealand’s profits going back to support thousands of great causes all over Aotearoa. So, every time you play any Lotto New Zealand game, it’s a win for our communities.

Yes, there are still some seats available if you look on the Octagon Theatre web site.
There's a cracking new play just opened at the Octagon Theatre in Whangarei. Inspired by wild weather events, local writer Cameron Tor has managed to arrange a well-balanced bluster of emotions within the confines of a mountain hut. The setting is perfect for a rerun of ancient family history with perfectly played protagonists Peter and Nico trapped in trauma while the unbothered causes of chaos, mum and dad and the success story of the family, brother Lewis make cameo appearances of depth and hilarity. Tor is in control of all his material, managing to write a last act that startled the group of seasoned English teachers within the audience, who staggered from the charming vintage theatre with tears in their eyes, or rain, or something. I highly recommend seeing it.
Thank you Catherine

Nice and well looked after. Size is 76cm wide, 39cm deep and 146cm high. Each section is the same size even though the picture makes the top ones bigger. No longer needed as we have upgraded to a bigger cabinet.
Price: $75

Dont use it anymore as I upgraded to a colour printer. It works fine and was very good to just print out anything where colour was not required. It comes with a spare toner cartridge and the CD to load the driver to your computer.
Price: $50

The votes for all finalists have been tallied and they have been chosen by Neighbourly members across the country as the Prospa Local Business Hero of 2024.
The Puketapu Hotel was nominated by a local called Margaret and the nomination reads:
'On Feb 14, 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle flooded many of the rural areas. Puketapu Hotel went under perhaps half a meter of water. However, immediately Mary Danielson and her son, Sam Danielson, along with their loyal staff pulled it together to cook copious amounts of food that without electricity would have been wasted. Throughout the years many of us have been treated with a pub gathering where we can reconnect and a free meal. At Christmas there was Santa, games, gifts for kids, donated patchwork for adults, an ice cream truck and lots of camaraderie.
This February on the cyclone anniversary, they again pulled out the stops to give hundreds of us a special night. We are all tired of the cyclone cleanup and they understood that it was needed.'
Such a deserving business and team, well done Mary and Sam. And thank you to all those who voted!

When the number of flights by commuter planes increased at the airport, it triggered a Civil Aviation Authority requirement to increase fire rescue services.
Around the same time, Council staff heard about the plight of the LandSAR volunteer group, which carries out search and rescue operations about 13 times a year.
Because of Northland’s terrain and communication dead zones, rescuers drive to locations when needed and use a mobile base, which includes a caravan, trailer and ute. They also have quite a lot of search and rescue equipment (cliff-rescue ropes etc.), which they need to store, and facilities for training. Without a permanent base, they have been shifting through a series of empty buildings across our District over the years.
Following discussions, the decision was made to provide space for them to store their equipment at the new RFS building, and to use the building’s facilities for training and to hold meetings.
We applied for $150,000 to expand the building and include space for the LandSAR base, from the 'Better Off' funding associated with Three Waters reforms. The balance of funding is from central government through the Ministry of Transport.
The new operational building and hangar will accommodate two fire trucks, airport administration offices and the LandSAR equipment, including their vehicle and mobile command unit (caravan).
The build will be completed by Hill Construction by May 2025. Follow our project page to track its progress:
