Avian botulism at Pharazyn Reserve

The Team from Kāpiti Coast District Council

⚠️ There’s currently an outbreak of avian botulism within the Pharazyn Reserve area between Waikanae Beach and Peka Peka.

This disease can cause paralysis and death in birds, and while low risk to humans it can make cats and dogs very sick. Please keep yourself and your animals away from any dead birds you may find in or near our waterways and don’t let them eat dead birds or fish.

Here's how you can help us contain outbreaks:
🦆 Avoid feeding ducks – it’s better to encourage them to forage naturally.
🦆 If you do feed the birds, don’t feed them bread – it can rot in ponds and promote the growth of botulism bacteria
🦆 Pick up your pet’s waste and dispose of it properly.
🦆 Report any dead birds in Council parks and public spaces, please phone us on 04 296 4700 or 0800 486 486.
🦆 Let your friends and family know how they can help to reduce avian botulism.
🦆 If you have wetlands on your property and find dead birds or other animals, use gloves and dispose of them immediately.

Mid February: very warm, very dry, & very sunny

Murray from Paraparaumu

I’m sure that comes as no surprise to anyone with only the slightest interest in the weather, but will it continue, I wonder?

February has been similar to January which was also dry and sunny, but was slightly cooler than average. However, February with a daily average temperature of just under 25ºC is running a degree warmer than the forecasts, and the second warmest in 15 years, with only 2016 being slightly warmer.

With no rain at all it’s as dry as 2019 and there has been 11 sunny days with only one with no sun at all.

For some, summer is over at the end of the month (two weeks away), but March with an average temperature of around 22.5 ºC it's still summer in Kapiti.
