Who should manage Kāpiti Coast’s water services in the future?

We’ve invested significantly in our drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater, and our current arrangements have served us well. But now, the Government’s Local Water Done Well policy means all councils must consider and consult on future water service options. After careful review, we’ve narrowed it down to two:

Option 1 – Keep our water services in-house (our preferred option).
We’d continue to manage water services in-house, with a few changes to meet regulation requirements. This would keep costs lower in the short to medium term while retaining full ownership and control.

Option 2 – A joint council-owned water services organisation with Horowhenua, Manawatū and Palmerston North.

Our water assets would be transferred to the new organisation. There will be higher costs initially, but water charges are projected to align with Option 1 by 2047.

Watch the video below to learn more, or visit our consultation page for details. Share your thoughts before midnight, 13 April: haveyoursay.kapiticoast.govt.nz...

We’re also hosting a webinar and drop-in sessions where you can ask questions and chat with elected members.

Your voice matters—let’s shape the future of the Kāpiti Coast’s water together.

In just a few weeks, neighbourhoods around Kāpiti will be bustling with events as Over the Fence Cuppa season kicks off, and we’re inviting you to join the fun.

The annual initiative, supported by Kāpiti Coast District Council and Neighbours Aotearoa, encourages community-minded people to organise an event in their streets or surroundings. It’s a great way to nurture local connections, grow resilience, and enhance well-being. There’s also plenty of Council support to get you started, including event packs full of ideas and resources, games to borrow, an invitation to a host launch event with our Mayor Janet Holborow, and the option of inviting a guest presenter to run a workshop.

Registrations close Friday 28 February. To find out more or register to host an event, visit Over the Fence Cuppa - Kāpiti Coast District Council.

Thursday 18 July, 10–11.30am, Kāpiti Boating Club, Paraparaumu Beach

Our Libraries have teamed up to host Taura awa – a joint community effort to weave tī kōuka (Cabbage tree) fibres into ropes that will guide our native whitebait through artificial structures such as culverts, helping them complete their migration. This project is the inspiration of Ōtaki weavers Sue Barrett, Denise Parata, and Mohi from Waikanae ki Uta ki Tai.

The session is free and there’s no need to register. Just turn up on the day and get involved!
