Free Metlink services for Christmas Eve, Day and New Years’ Eve travellers.
Metlink is offering free travel to all passengers travelling on all bus and train services on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.
Bus passengers can tag on and off with their Snapper at no cost. Those visiting or without a Snapper card simply need to let the driver know where they’re going and will be given a $0 ticket.
Those travelling on the Johnsonville line as part of the Snapper on Rail trial can also tag on and off without being charged. Train passengers travelling on any other line can simply board and ride for free.
Both Christmas Eve train and bus services will run to their usual weekday timetables.
On Christmas Day bus services will run to a standard Sunday timetable in Wellington City, Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kāpiti, and the Route 200 in the Wairarapa to a special timetable.
On New Year’s Eve bus services will run to a standard Saturday timetable in Wellington City, Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kāpiti and to a special timetable in the Wairarapa.
On Christmas Day train services on the Johnsonville and Hutt Valley lines will run to standard Sunday timetables. There will be no Melling or Wairarapa Line services. The Kāpiti Line will be replaced by bus.
On New Year’s Eve, train services on the Johnsonville, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa lines will run to standard Saturday timetables. The Melling Line will run hourly from 06:00am to 6:00pm. The Kāpiti Line will be replaced by bus.
East by West ferries are not included in the offer.
There’s no place like home for the holidays and with a likely influx of visitors to the region, the offer, extended this year to include Christmas Eve, is all about connecting family and friends for the festive season.
On including Christmas Eve in the offer this year, Scott Gallacher, Metlink’s General Manager explained “the day before Christmas means the roads will be busy and possibly quite frantic. Free travel on Metlink services means people can get home to each other safely and stress free before the special day or even for a last minute present finding mission to the shops.
“Tis the season for being together with loved ones and on the back of another year with less face to face family time, we wanted to help people re-connect on the big day and get home safely on the big night with free public transport across the region”.

Kāpiti housing crisis puts 40 children in emergency housing

The housing crisis in Kāpiti is now so bad that 50 adults and 40 children are in emergency housing. At the same time 190 are on the public housing waiting list — and even this does not reflect the actual need.
These figures were put before a Kāpiti Council workshop as part of a proposed housing strategy.
They were described as “pretty awful’ by Kāpiti district councillor Jocelyn Prvanov.
Councillors were told that a quick survey on Trade Me showed only 20 rental properties available in Kapiti. The cheapest is $400 weekly for a two bedroom property in Otaki.
The For-Sale’ list contained 213 properties in Kapiti – the cheapest was $620,000 in Raumati.
Kainga Ora has 250 houses in the district and 160 are living in boarding houses.
The rise in rents is partly from Covid but also from Wellington people “on Wellington wages” buying into Kapiti, the workshop was told.
People in the lowest quarter of the income scale have faced a 435 per cent rise in rents over the last twenty years. In that time the median income has only gone up by 112 per cent.
The percentage of renters who are no longer able to purchase a house and service a mortgage is estimated at 95 per cent. And only 88 percent are in a position to buy at the entry level of $696,000.
The housing crisis also extends to working people, with reports that police appointed to Otaki are struggling to find somewhere to live.
And councillors heard that people paying $800 rent every week would not be able to buy a house.
Councillor Angela Buswell described what she called the “massive problem” facing older people who will never get a mortgage, and who are paying up to $1200 a week for places to rent, often so they can have grandchildren to stay.
She said over 60s were still working so they could meet the rent and could never get into retirement villages because of price rises. Latest figures suggest Kapiti rest homes have 18 people on their waiting lists and two out of three have closed their books- they don’t have enough staff.
Councillor James Cootes, who has a business background, said business owners looking for replacement staff face a major problem – where are these people going to live.
Paekakariki’s Sophie Handford, by far the youngest councillor, said many young people were continuing to live at home or were ending up in very unsatisfactory living situations.

Guitar strings vary in price from around $12 to $50+ (for a 6 string guitar) per set depending on the make and quality.
I just bought 2 sets of Classical Guitar strings from Trade Me and they were made by D'Addario (or so the authentic looking packaging said).
I tend to use this make because they have a website there you can check a unique number printed on the inside packaging to see if they are authentic or fake.
I just checked the strings I bought (which both had the same numbers printed on them, these are unique numbers, so something not right there) and when I checked the number C0D7E-1298-268B-121266 on the website www.daddario.com... they came back as fake.
So just a warning that there are scammers now ripping of guitarists for 12 to 50+ dollars a set for strings.
Just in case you aren't aware there is a huge market in fake guitars out there and these can be into the 1000's of dollars each and still have "Made in USA" stamped on them and are hard to tell a fake from a photograph.
Just a heads up, check carefully before you buy online and actually ask if the item you are buying is genuine or not... any shifty answers or items with one distant photo or several blurred ones then leave it alone and move on.

The 63-year-old went missing after leaving the Metco Engineering workshop where he works in Waikanae last week, leaving a note saying “be back at 10.30” on a whiteboard. CCTV footage shows him leaving on foot.
