A Stitch in Time Saves Nine or More–
Well in this case we are looking for sewers to save our planet.

Do you want to do something to help?
Back in 2016 Boomerang Bags were introduced to New Zealand and, Lauree Jones of Taranaki Enviroschools brought the concept of Boomerang Bags to Taranaki. This was before no plastics shopping bags.

For a couple of years Volunteering New Plymouth were involved in the production and support of these.

Last year we decided to continue with the reusable bags under our own umbrella -Volunteering Bags – we have been working with Sustainable Taranaki on a couple of projects and one of them is to produce reusable bags for the Billow Bakery – so we have a new template, and we have material waiting for new sewers.

Currently we supply bags to:

• Age Concern for their frozen meals

• Taranaki Women’s Refuge for supplies

We also have the following Organisations waiting for us to produce bags

• Women’s Centre for women’s use

• Waitara Foodbank Pataka Kai

We are now also looking to make facemasks to donate to those who are not be able to afford to buy them, now we are required to wear masks in all indoor settings and having more than one per person, ensure best hygienic practices are possible. SO…..

We at Volunteering New Plymouth are looking for people to become part of a team of home sewers. "You just need a sewing machine or an overlocker, and time, enthusiasm and a smiling face," For those willing to help, we will hold a session to demonstrate how they are made from the pattern and from there the creativity begins.

"People can do it as a one off or they can do it over a long period of time,".

We have some material cut for bags and are looking to have a cutting session and demo on December 3rd at Blind Low Vision Hall at 131 Vivian Street, New Plymouth starting at 10am with morning tea get together. If you would like to be part of this and or if you're interested in sewing, or donating materials such as sewing cotton, machine needles or even a sewing machine that is sitting around unused in good working order and or if you think you would like to help in some other ways perhaps or just want to know more, please contact Volunteering New Plymouth 06 7588 986
