The Jackson Street Programme organises a range of Christmas events for children from throughout the region but this year it is facing a big funding shortfall.
JSP co-ordinator Hellen Swales said although retailing has bounced back since the lockdown, money is still tight, and the group needs to raise $30,000.
Swales is aware many families are struggling, and said it would be a shame if the free public events organised by the JSP did not happen.
The Petone Twilight Christmas Parade is scheduled for Friday, November 27, starting at 7pm.

Yes, another one… but this one is special: it’s a falls prevention exercise class for seniors, and it only costs a gold coin. Age Concern Wellington’s Ann Dalziel has started three new weekly classes in Lower Hutt (Knox Church), Khandallah (St Barnabas Church), and Churton Park (community centre). Age Concern Wellington now has 25 Steady as You Go exercise classes running each week around the Wellington Region. From Upper Hutt to Island Bay and over to Whitby, there’s a class near you.
“My balance has improved so much,” says one class participant, “and I’ve made many new friends here.”
These classes are designed to improve strength and balance and help prevent a fall. Steady as You Go classes improve balance and leg strength, flexibility, general fitness, and wellbeing. But most importantly perhaps, these classes are a great way to meet new people.
Classes consist of a combination of sitting, standing and walking exercises, and take around an hour. Call 04 499 6648 or visit www.ageconcernwellington.org.nz... for more information.
Falls are not a natural part of ageing!

A product of Naenae College, she later settled in Gisborne, where she was a social worker.
Her sporting CV includes representing New Zealand in touch, softball, rugby and rugby league.
Initially, her sporting success came in softball, playing for New Zealand and helping her club and Hutt Valley win numerous titles.
League was however her first love and in 2000 Hina was named MVP at the first women’s World Cup, where New Zealand beat Great Britain 26-4.
She was prominent in the Kiwi Ferns retaining the World Cup in 2005 and 2008.
In the 2008 defence, Hina was named MVP for a second time. In the final, New Zealand thrashed Australia 34-0, with Hina scoring two tries and kicking three conversions.
In 2010, she achieved arguably her greatest achievement by being selected to play for the Black Ferns at the World Cup.
She became the first female to win rugby and league World Cups.
Towards the end of her career, Hina was diagnosed with kidney disease and she was unable to fulfill her dream of playing Sevens at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
In 2015, she was inducted as a Hutt Valley Sports Awards legend.
