Mayor Graham Smith has called a NZTA are meeting in South Canterbury this Wednesday to look at options to address the problems at the Mt Cook turn off.

Were you part of the team that erected your own warning sign for motorists on Sunday? The 'non compliant' road warning sign at the intersection of Tekapo-Twizel Rd (State Highway 8) and Mt Cook Rd (State Highway 80) has driven the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) to meet in South Canterbury this week to discuss options about a dangerous intersection.

Residents taking matters into their own hands has ultimately prompted the NZTA to meet on Wednesday to discuss options to address the problems at the intersection, and it appears the sign will stay standing for the time being despite it not complying with NZTA or council regulations.

Hi neighbours,

Did you hear a "sonic boom" and see an object flying across the Canterbury sky? Many residents witnessed a suspected meteor this week.

The burning rock was at least the size of a fist – much larger than what astronomers usually see above New Zealand. Usually the objects are about the size of a grain of sand.

The arrival of a meteor can be impressive, with even something pebble-sized lighting up in the sky, Canterbury Astronomical Society president Euan Mason says.

So what did you think of the meteor? Where were you when you saw it? And do you see them often from your place? Let us know in the replies!
